Rehabilitation in oncology and geriatric field.

The student should acquire knowledge that will enable him/her to learn the meaning and role of rehabilitation of oncological and geriatric patients.

Approach, observation, evaluation and definition of the rehabilitation pathway of the oncological patient in relation to typical clinical and functional profiles:
- Significance and role of oncological rehabilitation
- Rehabilitation needs in breast carcinoma
- Rehabilitation needs in cervical-facial neoplasms
- Rehabilitation needs in thoracic tumours
- Rehabilitation needs in neuro-oncological pathologies
- Rehabilitation needs in musculoskeletal tumours
- Rehabilitation needs in advanced neoplasms: palliative rehabilitation and hospice rehabilitation
- Concept of quality of life
- Fatigue
- Rehabilitation protocols
- Evaluation scales
Approach, observation, evaluation and definition of the rehabilitation pathway of the geriatric patient:
- Definition of the elderly patient, physiological ageing and the concept of normality and normality, tools for assessing independence
- Targets/outcomes of rehabilitation in elderly,
- To know the main morbidity conditions of the elderly that require rehabilitation:
Stroke, Parkinson's disease, Fractures (femur, upper limb...), Chronic bone and joint pain, Ischemic heart disease, COPD, Cognitive decline, Immobility
- Definition of frail elderly: manipulation, communication, feeding, walking and balance disorder, sensory deficits
- Return to home after hospitalisation
- Placement in retirement home

Knowledge and understanding
The student is familiar, in the field of oncology, with the main areas of rehabilitation intervention and the outcomes associated with surgical procedures of physiotherapeutic interest; in the field of geriatrics, the student is familiar with the main disabling conditions requiring a rehabilitation programme.
Applied knowledge and understanding
The student is able to apply the knowledge acquired to identify, in the geriatric field, rehabilitation programmes appropriate to the disabling conditions identified, and to guide physiotherapy intervention in relation to surgical outcomes in the field of oncology.
Independence of judgement
The student is able to independently assess, based on the clinical and surgical picture in oncology or the disabling geriatric condition, which rehabilitation programme is most appropriate, justifying the choices made in relation to the expected outcomes.
Communication skills
The student is able to communicate clearly and effectively, using appropriate technical language, the characteristics of the identified rehabilitation programme both to other healthcare professionals (multidisciplinary team) and to the cancer or geriatric patient and their carers, adapting their communication style to the audience.
Ability to learn
The student is able to independently update their knowledge in the fields of oncology and geriatrics, incorporating the latest scientific evidence regarding surgical outcomes and rehabilitation pathways for disabling conditions, in order to continuously adapt their clinical practice.
