Auxology, secular trend. Development stages in pediatric ages. Nutrition from newborn to adolescent. The emerging problem of pediatric obesity. Infectious diseases and vaccines.

Learning Outcomes
To generate knowledge, understanding, and the ability to apply them in the context of major neonatal and pediatric conditions. Fundamental notions regarding the pediatric nutrition are also provided with examples relating to acute and chronic diseases and syndromes impacting on growth and development

General concepts of anatomy and physiology
Teaching Methods
Lectures and plenary discussions of clinical cases to develop the interpretation of diagnostic tests and clinical reasoning, building on the knowledge acquired in basic courses and applying it to pediatric cases.

Assessment Methods
Student have to demonstrate knowledge of treated diseases and ability in clinical reasoning. Written exam on topics discussed in class, through a multiple choice test. The test will be performed jointly with the other topics belonging to the integrated Course
Detailed Syllabus
Developmental phases in pediatric age (neonatal/infancy/puberty/adolescence). Auxology, secular trend, growth charts for evaluation of somatic growth. The main causes of short stature. Pubertal development and main developmental issues. Management of rare and chronic diseases. Pediatric nutrition (breast milk, formula, weaning). The emerging problem of obesity in children: prevalence, natural history, essential and secondary obesity, updates in the field of diagnosis and treatment of the disease.
Infectious diseases in pediatric age. Vaccination calendar.
Expected Learning Outcomes
Student has to demonstrate knowledge of covered issues and to use the most suitable techniques taking into account the age and the clinical condition of the child.
