Learning Outcomes
At the end of the course the student must know the characteristics of the main human tissues (components, main localization, function and embryological derivation) and the morphology of the relative cells
Prerequisites
The student must have the essential basic notions of Chemistry and Biology obtained in the high school
Teaching Methods
Classroom lessons in presence and Power Point presentations (uploaded to the DIR platform)
Additional Information
Students with physical disabilities, Learning Disabilities or Special Education Needs can request specific services and tools via the Staff Sviluppo e Coordinamento Carriere e Servizi alle Studentesse e agli Studenti, consulting the University webpage: https://www.uniupo.it/en/services/services-students-physical-or-learning-disabilities Students with disabilities, learning disabilities or special education needs, once they have contacted the University Staff, can refer to the tutor in charge of the course to define the examination modalities, concerning academic aspects.
Assessment Methods
Quiz with multiple choice questions (15 - 20 questions) to be taken online in the Esami DIR section together with the other modules of course
Detailed Syllabus
Preparation of histological samples (fixation, sectioning, and staining) - Classification of tissues and their embryonic origin (gastrulation and brief description of the three germ layers) - Connective tissues: cells and extracellular matrix (connective tissue proper, fluid, and specialized) - Supporting connective tissues (cartilage): hyaline, elastic, and fibrocartilage; chondrogenesis - Supporting connective tissues (bone): compact and spongy; osteogenesis - Blood: structure, function of plasma and cells; hematopoiesis - Principal covering epithelia: classification, structure, function, and location - Secretory epithelia: exocrine and endocrine glands - Muscle tissues: structure, function, and location of skeletal, cardiac, and smooth muscle; molecular basis of cellular movement and control of muscle contraction - Nervous tissue: neurons and glia; structure and organization.
Expected Learning Outcomes
Ability to recognize and describe human tissues, the morphology of their cells, and their main functions.
