Course materials available by the course instructor on the DIR (Didattica in Rete) online learning platform.
Learning Outcomes
Provide the knowledge to understand how the pathological alterations of biological processes cause various diseases and how these alterations are reflected in changes in laboratory parameters in different biological samples.
Provide an in-depth knowledge of Laboratory Medicine, which studies with different methods the biological alterations observed during illness; and obtains qualitative or quantitative numerical data from biological samples of the patient, which provide essential information not only for diagnosis, but also for therapies and prevention.
Prerequisites
Basic knowledge of human anatomy, biochemistry, physiology, physiopathology and general pathology.
Teaching Methods
PowePoint presentation.Teaching Network on DIR Website.Frontal lessons.Laboratory exercises.
Additional Information
Students with physical disabilities, Learning Disabilities or Special Education Needs can request specific services and tools via the Staff Sviluppo e Coordinamento Carriere e Servizi alle Studentesse e agli Studenti, consulting the University webpage: https://www.uniupo.it/en/services/services students-physical-or-learning-disabilitiesStudents with disabilities, learning disabilities or special education needs, once they have contacted the University Staff, can refer to the tutor in charge of the course to define the examination modalities, concerning academic aspects.
Assessment Methods
Written exam in the computer lab on the DIR Exams platform. Multiple-choice questions.
Detailed Syllabus
30 hours of lectures, in which the topics listed below will be discussed. 1.Laboratory Medicine: general information. 2.Bayes' theory. 3 .Laboratory medicine in the study of blood diseases and in the evaluation of biological fluids (CSF, ascitic fluid, pleural, synovial, cardiac): • the blood count • the blood count in the leukemia diagnosis 4. Laboratory medicine in the study of haemostasis and platelet function: • complete blood count, immature platelets fraction, • PFA, Multiplate, aggregometry according to Born method 5. Laboratory medicine in the study of coagulation: • pathophysiology of coagulation • coagulation test in the evaluation of thrombotic risk and haemorrhagic risk (screening and specialist tests) • Laboratory diagnostics of thrombophilias. 6. Feros metabolism. Laboratory tests for the evaluation of the martial profile. Laboratory diagnostics of hemoglobinopathies. 7. Pathophysiology of atherosclerosis • Evolution of Laboratory Medicine in the evaluation of heart damage • Evolution of Laboratory Medicine in the assessment of atherosclerotic plaque 8. Blood gas analysis • acid-base balance • hydro-saline balance 9. Serum proteins and monoclonal gammmopathies. 10. Study of thyroid function. 11. Pharmacogenetics.
Expected Learning Outcomes
Critical interpretation of laboratory data.Prescribing appropriateness of laboratory tests.Knowledge of diagnostic profiles, diagnostic protocols and diagnostic paths.
