Course Contents
Basic notions of statistics: descriptive and inferential statistics, confidence intervals and main hypothesis tests, correlation, regression and evaluation of the operational characteristics of diagnostic tests.

Learning Outcomes
At the end of the course, students will be able to describe from a statistical point of view of the data obtained from an experiment based on the type of variable measured and to identify and carry out the correct statistical test based on the biological hypothesis that guided the experiment carried out.

Students with disabilities, DSA, BES, once they have contacted the University Staff, can contact the teacher in charge of the course in relation to the declination of the exam methods, regarding the teaching aspects.
Assessment Methods
The exam consists of a written test consisting of 4/5 exercises concerning the topics covered during the frontal lessons and simple theoretical questions.Each exercise consists of several points. Each point is assigned a weight (between 0.5 and 4.5) based on the difficulty of the request, the sum of the weights will be equal to 31.Each point is assigned a score of 1 if it was done correctly, 0 if completely wrong, values between 0 and 1 based on the type of error committed.The grade will be given by the sum of the weight multiplied by the score of each sub-point of the exercise. The exam will be passed if the sum is equal to 18.To take the exam, students will have a calculator, tables of distributions and a formulary (made available on DIR) at their disposal.

Descriptive statistics (frequencies, position and variability indexes) Basics of probability and normal distribution Confidence intervals and hypothesis test for one mean Hypothesis test for proportions Chi-squared test T Test for independents and paired tests ANOVA test for the comparison of more than two independent means Overwiev of correlation and simple linear regression
Expected Learning Outcomes
Knowledge:At the end of the course, knowledge will be acquired regarding the main descriptive and inferential statistical analysis techniquesSkills:Ability to describe the results deriving from a biological experiment and carry out the correct statistical test based on the biological hypothesis that guided the experiment carried out. Furthermore, they will be able to understand the results reported in a scientific article regarding regression.Soft skills:Understanding of statistical analysis and the results reported in a scientific article in order to verify what is already known in the literature regarding a specific biological question of interest and compare the results obtained with those available in the scientific literature.
