Learning Outcomes
PHARMACOLOGY. The module is worth 5 credits for a total of 40 hours of lectures. The objective of the pharmacology module, within the context of this integrated course, is to provide students with the skills necessary to understand general pharmacology, pharmacokinetics, and pharmacodynamics of certain drug groups, with a view to their therapeutic use, research and development of new drugs, and innovation and improvement of pharmaceutical products. The concepts of small molecule drugs and biological/biotechnological drugs, their pharmacological differences, and preclinical and clinical development will be introduced.
Prerequisites
Students are required to have a good preparation in biochemistry, physiology, anatomy and general pathology

Assessment Methods
The learning assessment method includes a written test to be completed on "Esami Dir" using your own computer or you can request a workstation in the computer room. The exam consists of 35 multiple choice questions, of which only one is correct. The time available is 40 minutes. Each answer is worth 0.857: to achieve a passing grade (18) it is necessary to answer 21 questions correctly.
Detailed Syllabus
Introduction to pharmacology - Discovery and development of a new drug: pre-clinical and clinical phases - The main principles of drugs, conventional small molecules, biological/biotechnological drugs, equivalent and biosimilar drugs -Pharmacodynamic: receptors and signal transduction; meaning of agonist and antagonist; the dose-response curve; -Pharmacokineti: absorbtion, distribution, metabolism and excretion of drugs; definition of half life, bioavailability, clearance and distribution volume -Antiinflammatory drugs: FANS and glucocorticoids -Immunosuppressive drugs - Chemotherapeutci agents - Anti-ulcer drugs - Drugs in cardiovascular system: Anti-coagulant and anti-thrombotic drugs, Anti-hypertensive drugs -Drug for dyslipidemia -Ttreatment for diabetes type I and II - Drugs of nervous system: anti-depressives, anti-parkinson, anti-psycotic drugs, sedative-hypnotic, drug for neuromuscular disorders Drug of abuse: opioids, psicostimulants, cannabinoids. Integration of the gender dimension: where of interest, attention will be paid to gender pharmacology.
Expected Learning Outcomes
According to the Dublin descriptors D1- KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING: The student will know and understand the basic notions of general pharmacology and the pharmacological characteristics of different classes of a. D2- ABILITY TO APPLY KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING: The student will acquire the ability to use the theoretical knowledge imparted in class to reason critically, demonstrating that they are able to make connections between the different topics and to apply the knowledge acquired in the context of the synthesis of new drugs. D3- JUDGMENT ABILITY: The student will acquire the ability to critically examine the theoretical notions acquired and to be able to independently argue the problems arising from the practical application of the same. D4- COMMUNICATION SKILLS: The student will acquire the ability to disseminate the knowledge assimilated using a specific and appropriate vocabulary in order to be able to compare themselves in a professional and competent manner in the academic and subsequently working environment. D5-LEARNING ABILITY: The student will acquire a learning ability useful for continuous and constant updating on the new possibilities of discovering new pharmacological targets.
