Course Contents
The course aims to develop basic competencies and skills in understanding scientific texts, including mathematical representations and notations, taking into account the National Guidelines and curricula for upper secondary education.
Reference Texts
Didactic material provided by the teacher on the DIR platform of the course
Learning Outcomes
Being able to interpret scientific texts and, in particular, to decode and manipulate specific mathematical notations. The goal is to develop competencies related to the understanding and use of scientific language, including mathematical representations and notations.
Prerequisites
Language and mathematical skills required upon completion of upper secondary education
Teaching Methods
In-person lectures and remote training sessions, also carried out using the University's Moodle platform
Additional Information
Monitoring of learning: activities supported by the use of the University's Moodle platform. These activities have a formative goal: they are discussed and corrected together with the students.
Students with physical disabilities, Learning Disabilities or Special Education Needs can request specific services and tools via the Staff Sviluppo e Coordinamento Carriere e Servizi alle Studentesse e agli Studenti, consulting the University webpage: https://www.uniupo.it/en/services/services-students-physical-or-learning-disabilities
Students with disabilities, learning disabilities or special education needs, after they contacted the university staff, can refer to the teacher in charge of the course to define the examination modalities.
Assessment Methods
Final test, similar to the initial skills assessment. The test consists of questions on the comprehension and use of scientific language, including mathematical representations and notations. To pass the test, students must obtain more than 50% of the points. The test consists of an online questionnaire including 20 questions related to the understanding and use of scientific texts in Italian, as well as mathematical representations and notations. The maximum duration of the test is 40 minutes (with exceptions for those entitled to additional time). Each question is worth up to a maximum of 0.5 points. The test is considered passed with a score of 5.01/10 or higher across the 20 questions.
Detailed Syllabus
The course addresses content and problems related to the core competencies required to successfully attend first-year courses at DiSIT. It involves analyzing scientific texts and mathematical problems, identifying data and their relationships, and utilizing mathematical representations and notations. In particular, the course covers different representations of numbers, units of measurement, the properties and use of algebraic notations, and the graphical representations of relations and data.
Expected Learning Outcomes
Ability to comprehend and analyze basic scientific texts, recognizing their structural features and specific terminology, while correctly utilizing mathematical representations and notations. Identifying data and relationships within mathematical problems and scientific texts, applying problem-solving strategies. Utilizing different representations of numbers and their corresponding units of measurement. Interpreting graphical representations of relations, data, and phenomena.
