Course Contents
Fundamental concepts in nuclear physics, nuclear models, qualitative description of fusion and fission reactions and nuclear decays. Review of the concepts of radiation interaction with matter. Base concepts in dosimetry and radioprotection.
Reference Texts

Learning Outcomes
Foundation of nuclear physics, nuclear decays, fission and fusion reaction. Provide a good understanding of radioprotection principles and regulations. The students will be able to evaluate risks related to the use of radioactive sources and be able to improve their understanding through specific literature.
Prerequisites
Content of the courses Physics II, Structure of Matter, Quantum Mechanics
Teaching Methods
Classroom lectures and numerical exercises.
Additional Information
Monitoring the learning process will be achieved by posing questions to students during lectures and exercise sessions, and also through quizzes proposed on the DIR platform.
Students with physical disabilities, Learning Disabilities or Special Education Needs can request specific services and tools via the Staff Sviluppo e Coordinamento Carriere e Servizi alle Studentesse e agli Studenti,
consulting the University webpage: https://www.uniupo.it/en/services/services-students-physical-or-learning-disabilities
Students with disabilities, learning disabilities or special education needs, once they have contacted the University Staff, can refer to the tutor in charge of the course to define the examination modalities, concerning academic aspects.
Assessment Methods
Oral exam, aiming at assessing the degree of understanding of the subject.
Detailed Syllabus
Nuclear structure. Radioactive decays and their theoretical description. Radiation interaction with matter. Dosimetry and relative units of measure. Radioprotection: methods and legal aspects.
Gender integration: the importance of gender integration in research, teaching programs and training will be discussed.
Expected Learning Outcomes
- Knowledge and understanding: main concepts of nuclear physics, nuclear decays, fusion and fission reactions. Principles of radioprotection for the general population and for professionally exposed workers.
- Applying knowledge and understanding: be able to find and use documentation about radioactive emissions and mean lives of radioactive decays from literature and databases. Evaluate risks connected with use of radioactive sources and be able to apply the regulations on radioprotection.
- Learning skills: mastery of base concepts in order to enable knowledge expansion through the study of literature.
