English Language 3 practical classes (Group A/1, General English and Group B/2, Business English) focus on language use, and in-depth study and application of the following contents: Complex grammatical structures; lexical expansion (general vocabulary and professional terminology; lexis of scientific dissemination); verb tenses and contrastive approach (English vs. Italian); epistemic and deontic modality in English; writing paragraphs and longer texts; describing events and circumstances; summarising, paraphrasing, and reformulating skills.

English Language Practical Classes 3,  GR A-General English e GR B-Business English, aim to develop lexical, grammatical, morpho-syntactic, and discursive skills (both encoding and decoding) of contemporary English, with a focus on Business English.  The general contents and specific topics, language skills and activities, the end-of-course examination, as well as the assessment criteria applied, refer to an advanced (B2+) C1 level of the CEFR (Common European Framework of Reference).

LCT (MA):
1-first option: English Language for Tourism A (English Language A Practical Classes 2 year, Group Business English + English Linguistics A 2nd Level, MA-LM 49), if English Language B Practical Classes 3 year (Esercitazioni) and related exam are attended at the second year of MA-LM 49.  2-second option: competence: B2+ CEFR (Common European Framework of Reference), if English Language B Practical Classes 3 year (Esercitazioni) and related exam are attended at the first year of MA-LM 49. This specific language level will be tested after enrollment. ALL THE STUDENTS SHOULD HAVE A COPY OF THE COMPULSORY TEXTS (see above). Practical Classes will start in October 2026 and will end in June 2027.ENGLISH LANGUAGE PRACTICAL CLASSES III YEAR Written exam (2 hrs)Your practical classes final mark is the average of all your grades in the different sections of the written exam. 3rd-year students have to pass their translation activity + essay writing (GE) or press release + report writing (BE): min. 18/30 for all of them.With reference to the 'Intended learning objectives' (see below), the following grades correspond to different skills: 18-22/30-sufficient, 23-25/30-satisfying, 26-28/30 good, 29-30 lode-very good.Oral interaction skills, language competence, and fluency (discourse structure, pronunciation, lexis, morphosyntax, and linguistic appropriateness) will be assessed by professor E. General English - Group A/1 (for details see specific syllabus)WRITTEN EXAM (2 hrs):TRANSLATION (200-250 words, 45 minutes). This includes the translation of a medium-length text from Italian into English. Monolingual English-English dictionary allowed.DESCRIPTIVE ESSAY WRITING (450-500 words, 75 minutes). Describe, expose, explain, exemplify in order to assess grammar, lexis, spelling, punctuation, textual cohesion and coherence, logical structure, and clarity/perspicuity. Monolingual English-English dictionary allowed.Business English - Group B/2 (for details see specific syllabus)WRITTEN EXAM, 2 hrs:PRESS RELEASE (200-250 words, 45 minutes): this activity aims to test students' writing skills in structuring a concise text, along with the use of specialised lexis in a professional setting.REPORT WRITING (450-500 words, 75 minuti): students are required to write a report starting from commercial/business data to assess the ability to interpret the main issues, expose them, and provide a critical perspective. This activity also aims to assess the use of grammar, lexis, spelling, and punctuation in a well-organised text.

English Language Practical Classes 3 are based on the textbooks, and on further materials uploaded to DIR (Didattica in Rete).Grammatical structures with a view on contrastive aspects (Italian vs. English): simple and complex sentences, relative clauses (full and reduced) in structuring a written text.Lexical expansion (general vocabulary and specialised terminology): combining noun words and adjectives to denote and connote.Tense consolidation: combining verbs and adverbs.The expression of modality in English: modal verbs and adverbs of manner.Writing paragraphs and longer texts: practising cohesion beyond sentence level.Describing events and circumstances: textual consistency.Summarising, paraphrasing, and reformulating skills: language competence (grammar, lexis, and morpho-sytax).NOTA BENE: See also the detailed syllabi for GR-A General English e GR B-Business English.

KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING Students will be able to read and understand complex texts at an advanced level in contemporary English, of general contents and/or on professional issues. APPLIED KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING They will also be able to describe and interpret data from non-verbal sources, to write medium length paragraphs from an outline, and to have a conversation on general/current topics, professional and/or academic issues.  Linguistic knowledge and language understanding will be used at a practical level, and applied to the many disciplinary research and professional contexts.
