FORMS AND GENRES OF WESTERN MUSIC

Oral examination. It consists of two open-ended questions designed to assess the student's ability to illustrate the historical framework and to link musical data and method of analysis. An exam will be evaluated as excellent if it demonstrates: an organic and in-depth view of the topics covered in the course; developed skills of analysis and synthesis; excellent command of specific vocabulary and musical concepts; ability to elaborate theoretically through the rich use of relevant examples. An exam will be evaluated as fair if it demonstrates: only sometimes mechanical knowledge of the subject; appropriate and correct language; the ability to analyze and synthesize; good use of exemplification in relation to a theoretical exposition, which considers the different aspects of the history of musical genres. An exam will be evaluated as sufficient if it demonstrates: basic knowledge of the program covered (notions and method), often expounded in mnemonic form, but with an awareness of the methodology used; basic and correct use of terminology; presentation of appropriate examples within the scope of the treatment. An exam that demonstrates at least one of these traits will be rated as insufficient: major formative gaps; mislearning of notions/concepts or methodology; inappropriate language; the mere reproduction/listing of notions or definitions, lacking the required conceptual links; lack of orientation within the topic examined; scarcity, absence or incorrect use of examples

The course will provide the basic knowledge on Western Classical Music (Forms and Genres: sacred music, symphony, concerto, opera). The aquired knowledge will be applied in the analysis of small musical samples

KNOWLEDGE -To develop theoretical knowledge of the discipline by becoming familiar with the phenomena of Western musical history
SKILLS -To be able to recognize and classify in the proposed and analyzed musical documents the phenomena presented theoretically; to be able to define and illustrate the notions discussed in class.
TRANSVERSAL SKILLS -To know how to clearly and circumstantially describe the main phenomena, using specific terminology appropriately; to know how to explore topics in depth on specific textbooks
