History of tourism between modern and contemporary age

The course aims to provide the advanced analytical tools to understand the evolutionary stages and dynamics of tourism in both local and global contexts and to understand the historical dimension of cultural categories related to tourism phenomena.

At the basic level, the course has the following objectives:
- Knowledge of the main historical junctures and different types of modern tourism.
- Knowledge of the events specific to tourism development in relation to the main social, cultural and institutional events of specific contexts, both local and global.
- Acquisition of methodological tools for reading, analyzing and critiquing tourism phenomena of the past up to the development of mass forms of tourism.
- Acquisition of the specific language of university-level scholarly literature, and that of historical tourism analysis in particular.

At a more advanced level, the course objectives are:

- Knowledge of techniques and methods of analyzing different forms of tourism over the long term;
- Ability to situate the development of tourism practices and flows in the broader historical, cultural and technological context in which they emerged, evaluating their impact and interactions in different societies. 
- Ability to make critical judgments and trace connections on the topics discussed, also the outcome of personal elaboration, and to explain and argue through a fluent, precise presentation with appropriate use of specific terminology. The 6 CFU credits provided by the course are broken down by teaching method as follows: lecture-based (2 CFU), interactive (2 CFU), and self-directed learning (2 CFU).

General knowledge of major events in European and world history across early modern and modern age.

Lectures with use of power point presentations and audio/visual materials. Educational visits to the city's museums and cultural institutions.

As for the indicative reading list: the volume "Storia di Vercelli in età moderna e contemporanea" is out of print, therefore the pdf of the considered chapters will be made available (see the area Dir of the course). A complimentary and personal copy of "Storia della Valsesia" will be provided to all attending students; the pdf of the considered chapters will be made available. To those unable to attend a different mode of getting the volume can be arranged via email (irene.gaddo@uniupo.it)

Oral exam of at least 20 minutes with reference to: a) turning points and issues in the history of tourism in a global perspective; b) cultural transformations and cognitive elaboration of the world in modern and contemporary times in relation to their effects on tourism phenomena; c) structural and typological evolution of tourism in the Piedmontese case between the 18th and 21st centuries. 

Students are therefore asked to demonstrate:
1.KNOWLEDGE
- Knowledge of fundamental events and main points in the history of modern tourism.
- Knowledge of the various types of tourism practices and of the links with specific cultural contexts and with the dynamics of globalization.
SKILLS
- Acquisition of fundamental notions for the analysis of tourism practices and trends.
- Acquisition of interpretative tools on tourism development, both at a local and global level.
3. SOFT SKILLS
- Ability to present with clarity and argumentative effectiveness the themes developed during the course, using the appropriate terminology.

The individual aspects will be given the following value in assessing the achievement of learning objectives: 1. 40%; 2. 40%; 3. 20%. The final grade is determined on the following criteria: - 18 to 21/30. Sufficient knowledge and understanding of the fundamental concepts of the course, the areas of inquiry in history of mobility and history of tourism, together within their specific contexts. Sufficient ability to understand and contextualize critical issues in history of tourism through the topics of the module. Minimal ability to independently apply the knowledge acquired and to communicate it using appropriate terminology. Minimal ability to acquire new skills. - 22 to 25/30. Fair knowledge and understanding of the fundamental concepts of the course and the areas of inquiry in historical research within the field of history of mobility and history of tourism. Fair ability to understand and contextualize critical issues through the topics dealt with the course. Fair ability to independently apply acquired knowledge and communicate it using appropriate terminology. Fair ability to acquire new skills. - 26 to 28/30. Good knowledge and understanding of the fundamental concepts of the course and the areas of inquiry in historical research related to mobility and tourist practices, accompanied by critical awareness. Good ability to understand and contextualize the topics addressed in the course. Good ability to independently apply the knowledge acquired and communicate it using appropriate terminology. Good ability to acquire new skills. - From 29 to 30/30 cum laude. Excellent knowledge and understanding of the fundamental concepts of the course and the areas of historical inquiry within the field of mobility and tourist dynamics, accompanied by a high level of critical awareness. Excellent ability to understand and contextualize the developments of mobility and tourist practices through the topics covered in the module. High ability to independently apply the knowledge acquired and to communicate it using appropriate terminology. High ability to acquire new skills.

Didactic unit 1: Travel and Tourism: evolution and definitions through sources from the long modern age • didactic unit 2: The modern age (I): explorations and new worlds • didactic unit 3: The modern age (II): empires and mental geographies between East and West • didactic unit 4: The formative travel and the Grand Tour • didactic unit 5: The great economic, social and cultural transformations and the beginning of tourism • didactic unit 6:Tourism, evolution of transport, the mass society • didactic unit 7: Colonialism, gender tourism, environment • didactic unit 8: Tourism and territory between modern and contemporary age (I): the case of Piedmont • didactic unit 9-11: Tourism and territory (II): the case of Vercelli and its region • didactic unit 12-13: Tourism and territory (III): the case of Valsesia. Two cultural visits will be organized in Vercelli (dates to be defined and made available on Dir during the course).

To achieve knowledge and skills corresponding to a minimum level of sufficiency, the student is asked to demonstrate:
KNOWLEDGE
- Knowledge of the fundamental events and the main turning points of the history of modern and contemporary tourism.
- Knowledge of the variety of tourism phenomena and their links with specific cultural contexts and with the dynamics of globalization.
SKILLS
- Acquisition of some fundamental notions of analysis of the historical development of tourism phenomena. 
- Acquisition of interpretative tools of tourism practices and flows both at a local and global level.
SOFT SKILLS:
- Ability to present with clarity and argumentative effectiveness the themes of the course, making use of appropriate terminology.

To achieve an advanced level, the student must demonstrate:
- Comprehensive and unified understanding of the course together with theoretical-methodological and interpretive skills.
- Active and confident competence in the use of disciplinary language, combined with an excellent property of expression.
- Ability to autonomously rework the contents of the course and develop interdisciplinary connections.
