Learning Outcomes
The course, worth 10 ECTS credits, is the core course devoted to developing the theory and methods relating to accounting recognition and the preparation, presentation, analysis, and interpretation of annual financial statements. It is delivered in person through lecture-based teaching (DE), supplemented by examples and practical exercises. The overall workload also includes self-study activities based on the individual study of course materials and the independent completion of exercises. No interactive teaching (DI), online lecture-based teaching (TEL-DE), or online interactive teaching (TEL-DI) activities are provided.

Knowledge and understanding

The course aims to provide students with the business administration and accounting knowledge required to record business transactions and understand the meaning and underlying logic of the accounting process. The progressive consolidation of knowledge relating to accounting will enable students to develop economic, technical, accounting, and managerial skills. By the end of the course, students will be able to understand the process of preparing financial statements intended for publication, identify the information they contain, and assess their information potential and limitations.

Applying knowledge and understanding

The accounting knowledge acquired will enable students to develop technical and accounting skills. The approach adopted focuses on identifying and understanding the essential methods for correctly measuring and recognising individual items in financial statements in accordance with the Italian accounting standards issued by the Organismo Italiano di Contabilità (OIC).

The study of theory will be supported by examples and practical exercises, which are essential for understanding the operational mechanisms involved in recording business transactions through accounting entries and preparing financial statements. During the exercises, students will be actively involved and will be able to assess their understanding and their ability to apply the knowledge acquired.

By the end of the course, students will be able to assess the estimates and assumptions included in annual financial statements; apply the main accounting measurement criteria; record the principal business transactions; prepare annual financial statements and a statement of cash flows; reclassify financial statements; and use accounting information to assess the financial health of a business.

Making judgements

The course will enable students to develop independent judgement and critical analysis skills regarding business transactions recorded through financial accounting, the measurements and estimates made when preparing financial statements, and the related financial performance, financial position, and cash flows presented in the annual financial statements.

Communication skills

Based on the knowledge acquired, students will develop the communication and interpersonal skills required to provide business advisory services, perform accounting assessments, and undertake administrative and accounting responsibilities. They will also acquire the technical language specific to the discipline, enabling them to communicate clearly, rigorously, and appropriately with both people possessing specialist expertise and non-specialist audiences.

Learning skills

The course provides the methodological tools required to develop effective self-directed learning through the study and critical examination of Italian accounting standards. The teaching approach will enable students to acquire progressively the concepts and underlying logic of accounting, analyse the main business transactions, and represent them correctly through accounting entries and in annual financial statements.

Integration of the gender dimension

The course will include a brief overview of women’s entrepreneurship, with particular reference to the role of women in the creation, management, and development of businesses.

Assessment Methods
The exam consists of a written test, including practical exercises and questions aimed at assessing students’ understanding of the topics covered during the course.

The written test is followed by a compulsory oral examination, reserved for students who have obtained a pass mark in the written test. The oral examination is aimed at further assessing the student’s overall preparation, command of technical accounting terminology, and ability to connect the different topics included in the course programme.
