Agri-food Law

For the student's choice, two books are suggested alternatively: F. Albisinni, Strumentario di diritto alimentare europeo, V edizione, Milano, 2023. L. Costato - P. Borghi - S. Rizzioli - V. Paganizza - L. Salvi, Compendio di diritto alimentare, XI edition, Milan, 2025. The articles to study are defined at the beginning of the lessons.

The course aims to provide students with the knowledge of food law principles to have the tools to orient themselves within the articulated international, European and national discipline that regulates the agri-food sector.

No prerequisites required in addition to the skills acquired with the first year courses.

Lectures supported by slides, integrated with moments of discussion.
Please note that some lessons may be held online, subject to prior notification to students.
Seminars will be organized during the course to explore specific topics and to host critical student presentations on case studies relevant to the program. Students are invited to attend conferences on the subject, should they be organized by the department or the University, and their participation with brief interventions is highly encouraged, conditions permitting. Furthermore, group or individual projects will be assigned, requiring critical analysis of course content and its practical application, culminating in an in-class presentation and a written paper. Assessment will take into account not only the knowledge of the contents, but also the capacity for analysis, argumentation, and active participation in classroom activities.

Students with disabilities, learning disabilities or special education needs, once they have contacted the University Staff, can refer to the tutor in charge of the course to define the examination modalities, concerning academic aspects.

Students who attend lectures regularly, receive an assessment based on participation and contribution to classroom, included the presentation of the project (this assessment accounts for 50% of the final grade). Team reports are evaluated with 1 points (24/30), 2 points (27/30) and 3 points (30/30). For these students, the written test includes only 1 question. The final grade is the result of the average of the written test with the report carried out in the classroom. For non-attending students, it is required a written exam (sixty minutes to three questions, ten points each, to be answered briefly) concerning the contents of the suggested book.
To pass the exam, students must achieve a minimum score of 18/30.
All students (attending and non-attending students) are thus expected to achieve a basic knowledge of the fundamental notions of agri-food law and how it is applied.

The Common Agricultural Policy.
Biodiversity protection.
Food safety.
The legislation on new foods, on foods consisting of GMOs. Foods from organic farming.
The rules on food labelling and advertising.
The patent rights (geographical mark); IGP and DOP; Made in Italy, Green made in Italy and other rules for the enhancement of food products.
Unfair practices, competent authorities, late payments.
Official controls and sanctions.

To achieve the skills and knowledge expected at the end of the course, the student is required to know the basic notions of agri-food law and to reach the end of the course knowing how to examine and understand a practical case in order to find a concrete solution.
