Learning Outcomes
Provide the basics on the operation and use of the most modern instrumental analytical techniques. To enable students to follow simple analytical methods in the laboratory and provide them with the fundamental concepts for good laboratory practice.

Assessment Methods
Oral exam with three open questions on the main methods of instrumental analysis covered in the course. laboratory. Evaluation of the laboratory report of each experience.
Detailed Syllabus
Introduction to chromatographic techniques: theory of theoretical plates, velocity theory, Van Deemter equation, parameters for the evaluation of the goodness of chromatographic separation: efficiency, resolution, scodaturation, width and asymmetry of peaks. Chromatographic separation mechanisms: adsorption, distribution, ion exchange, dimensional exclusion. Liquid chromatography and gas chromatography. HPLC instrumentation: pumps, sample introduction systems, columns, detectors. GC instrumentation: sample introduction systems, columns, detectors. Introduction to spectroscopic techniques of atomic absorption and emission. Atomic flame absorption, graphite oven, inductively coupled plasma. Instrumentation used: hollow cathode lamp and discharge lamp without electrodes, atomization system, sample introduction, monochromators, detectors. Spectral interference, chemical, matrix effect. UV-vis spectroscopy: Lambert-Beer law and its deviations, instrumental components- X-ray fluorescence: fundamental principles, basic instrumentation and applications. X-ray powder diffraction: fundamental principles, instrumentation and application for the qualitative and quantitative analysis of crystalline phases.
Expected Learning Outcomes
Knowledge and understanding - knowledge of the theoretical/practical bases of the main analytical techniques (chromatographic, elementary analysis based on mass spectrometry and x-ray fluorescence) - knowledge of the performance indices of analytical methods - knowledge of unitary laboratory operations and the use of instrumental methods of analysis Ability to apply knowledge and understanding - to be able to compare different techniques for the same purpose also through analysis of analytical performance indices - know how to perform analysis Communication skills - acquire and know how to use an appropriate chemical vocabulary in relation to the topics covered in the course - know how to draw up a technical-scientific report Making judgements - know how to choose between different analytical techniques to solve a given analytical problem - know how to deal with a volumetric analysis by making the appropriate choices from an experimental point of view Learning skills - ability to use the study material independently to solve analytical problems
