The seminar aims at bringing students to deal with the multiple aspects
of communication within the legal domain. In fact, communicating the
law means a deep knowledge of those argumentative techniques that are
at the core of legal experience. The seminar will be about the work that
leads to write legal texts (such as papers and a degree’s thesis) as well
as other formats of legal communication, such as the written (e.g. essay
reviews, legal advices) and oral ones, or the active and the passive ones
too.

There is no text of reference for the seminar. Materials for learning and
for practicing (such as scientific papers, parts/chapters of books, case
law) will be provided throughout the seminar and uploaded on DIR.

The seminar has the educational goal of bringing students to understand
the role of legal communication and to know some of its major
techniques (academic and professional ones; written and oral ones;
active and passive ones).

The seminar will be a mix of different ways of teaching and learning.
Some lectures will aim at showing how to conceive, develop and write a
legal text in its different formats and types. Other classes will be
dedicated to some exercitations. Students will be supposed to take an
active role in the seminar by writing little pieces of legal communication.
Because of this, the seminar calls for students’ active participation and
attendance is strongly suggested for the achievement of learning
objectives.

Meetings with students will be organised from time to time. Students are
invited to send e-mails to massimo.vogliotti@uniupo.it.

The fitness in the achievement of learning objectives will be checked in
light of active involvement in the seminar as well as of the results of
(written and oral) exercitations scheduled during the seminar. Students
unable to attend classes will be asked to have an oral test in addition to
the evaluation of written exercitations.

Writing a scientific legal text (e.g. brief paper, review, degree’s thesis).
This part of the seminar is supposed to provide students with the
following skills: how to make research; how to write summaries and
schemes; what techniques for legal writing.
Writing a reaction paper
Writing a case comment
Writing a legal advice, solving a practical case
Oral presentation and discussion of some of the written works.

The seminar is supposed to make students familiar with some of the
major techniques of legal communication. This knowledge will
supplement the rather theoretical and institutional one offered through
traditional courses, so that students will eventually reach a more
complete understanding of legal experience.
