The course will offer an overview of the main interpretative strands of migration processes on an international and national scale, focusing on the glocal dimension of these processes and the impact they have on the territories in terms of policies and services. Particular attention will be paid to the gender dimension of migration processes and the global imbalances it generates in this regard. A thematic insight will be agreed with the teacher on the basis of the student preferences.

The students will have to acquire the basic knowledge of the sociology of migration and know how to orient themselves between the various strands of the reference literature. They must be able to interpret migratory phenomena critically and to understand the connection between global and local dynamics, taking into account both the structural and the microsociological aspects of these dynamics. The students must also be able to use a specific scientific language and to deepen a topic chosen from those proposed through a written paper.

Lessons will be held mainly in frontal mode, but interaction and discussion on specific topics will be encouraged.

Oral examination. Written paper ona chosen topic agreed with the teacher. The discussion will focus on the textbooks and on the discussion of the written paper. The paper must be a text between 7 and 10 pages long, with an index agreed with the teacher, which involves the reading and original reinterpretation of texts (it is possible to agree with the teacher the replacement and / or integration of the texts with other in-depth material). The paper must be delivered by the end of the didactic semester. The final grade will be determined by the knowledge of the exam textbooks and the ability to anchor them to real or potential experiences, as well as the quality of the paper and its presentation. Composition of the evaluation: Sufficient evaluation: basic knowledge of the texts, mostly desk written work based on the reading of a single text, sufficient presentation of the paper Intermediate evaluation: Thorough knowledge of the texts and written argumentative work, based on the reading of several texts, good presentation of the paper. Honors/Excellence: In-depth knowledge of the texts, argumentative and original written work based on various scientific sources, excellent presentation of the paper, with critical skills and cross-connections among different fields and theories.

The course will offer an overview of the main interpretative strands of migration processes on an international and national scale, analyzing the phenomenon of migration both in a diachronic and synchronic way. The conceptual tools for analyzing the phenomenon will be defined and global dynamics will be linked with local ones, in a glocal perspective. We will also analyze the impact that these processes have on the territories in terms of policies and services and what consequences these have on the dynamics of inclusion and participation of foreign people. Particular attention will be paid to the dynamics related to the gender dimension of migration processes and the imbalances in access to the labor market and care work that they generate on a global scale. Based on the interests of the student, the study of a specific topic that will be dealt with in a written paper will be agreed with the teacher.

The student will be able to interpret the phenomenon of migration in both historical and synchronic terms, and will possess the conceptual tools to critically analyze the production processes of inequalities on a global scale. It will also be able to link these processes to the local and territorial dimension in terms of policies and services.
