Approaching the neurologic patient. Semeiotics in neurology.
Diagnostic investigations in neurology. Pathophysiology, clinical picture, diagnosis and treatment of the most frequent neurological disease. Selected rare pathologies in neurology.
The basis of physical medicine and rehabilitation.

Learning Outcomes
Knowledge, understanding and ability to apply the principles of neurologic semiology, particularly history-taking and the neurologic examination. Approaching the basic strategies of neuro-rehabilitation.
Knowledge, understanding and ability to apply the principles of clinical neurology, in terms of pathophysiology, presentation, diagnosis and treatment of the more common neurologic diseases, and of selected rare diseases.
Develop a clear autonomy of judgment with respect to these issues. Develop communication skills with the patient and colleagues, such as to guarantee a correct and constant transfer of information during the clinical approach. Demonstrate learning skills on the topics in the programme, such as to allow rational and effective clinical action.
Prerequisites
Adequate background knowledge in the field of neuroanatomy, neurophysiology, and biochemistry.
Adequate background knowledge in the field of general pathophysiology and internal medicine.
Teaching Methods
Standard interactive lectures, with audio- and video clips. Every lecture comes with its set of Powerpoint slides, which are uploaded at the "Didattica in Rete" ("DIR") UPO website. During the lectures, students are asked several questions. This tests the student attention, their previous knowledge and ongoing learning, and their understanding and potential ability to clinical practice.
During ward-rounds, the student approaches the neurologic patient under the supervision of the Professor or of other Tutors.
Assessment Methods
"Traditional" interview. The student is asked general questions on diseases listed in the program. The student is provided with paradigmatic clinical cases, and is requested to outline the clinical conduct.The anatofunctional bases, the diagnostic process and the potential treatment are reviewed. The student is tested as for logic reasoning, and knowledge and understanding of neurologic disease. The student is also evaluated for his communication tasks, and the overall ability to deal with specific clinical cases.
For some modules of the course, multiple-choice written questions are used. Every module undergoes a separate analysis. On the whole, the final judgement represents the weighted mean of the single modules.

Pathophysiology and semiology of motor disturbances. The sensitivities. Neuropsychology and the defects of cogntive functions. Brainstem and spinal cord syndromes. Pathophysiology and semiology of the vegetative functions. The syncopes.
Coma and disorders of consciousness. Sleep and its disturbances.
Epilepsies and Status Epilepticus.
Migraine and other cephalalgias.
Cranial and spinal traumas.
Radiculospinal pathologies of neurosurgical interest.
Central nervous system infections.
Demyelinating disease.
Cerebrovascular disease.
Intracranial neoplasms.
Dementia.
Parkinson's disease, Parkinsonisms and other Movement Disorders.
Motoneuron disease.
Hereditary ataxias.
Peripheral nerve disease.
Myopathies.
Disorders of the neuromuscular junction.
Neurologic complications of internal medicine.
Neurological emergencies.

Expected Learning Outcomes
The student will show an adequate knowledge, understanding, and ability to apply the principles of neurologic semiology and of clinical neurology, in terms of pathophysiology, clinical picture, diagnosis and treatment of the more common diseases, and of some selected rare diseases.
The student will show an independent ability of judging, and specific communication tasks, so to warrant an efficient and consistent clinical action.
The student will be familiar with the basics of neurorehabilitation.
