Learning Outcomes
The aim of this course is to focus on the main pathologies of the pediatric age in order to acquire the professional skills useful to manage the complexity of the pathologies and peculiarities of the child.
The program is divided into three pediatric modules with a multidisciplinary, interprofessional, and integrated vision of the main health problems of the pediatric age, not only focused on the disease but also on the child himself, taking into account the totality of body and psyche, the peculiarities of the developmental age, gender differences and the social context, including his family.
The teaching method involves the horizontal and vertical integration of knowledge and is oriented to the ability to solve problems and make decisions. Attention is also paid to the prevention of diseases and the promotion of children’s health.
Prerequisites
The students have to know the main physiology and pathology knowledge about pediatric age learned during basic medicine courses, taking into consideration the new care and health needs centered not only on the disease but on the sick child and his family.
Teaching Methods
Lectures and plenary discussions of clinical cases to develop the interpretation of diagnostic tests and clinical reasoning, starting from the knowledge acquired in the basic courses, declined in the pediatric age.
Assessment Methods
Oral examination.
Students have to demonstrate knowledge of treated
diseases and ability in clinical reasoning.
Detailed Syllabus
Small and large for gestational age newborn. Breast
feeding and weaning. Apgar index. Neonatal
jaundice.
Pediatric semeiotics. Prevention in childhood of adult
dieseases.
New health and social needs in pediatric age.The
emerging problem of pediatric obesity.
Pediatric Infection Diseases and vaccination calendar. Prevention
and therapeutic appoach. Pubertal disorders.
Management of cronic dieseases. Thyroid disorders.
Adrenal hyperplasia and insufficiency.
Auxology: pathophysiology of stature-weight growth and pubertal development. Low stature: endocrine and non-endocrine causes, growth hormone deficiency, Laron syndrome.
Diabetes
Mellitus. Main gastroenterological diseases in
childhood: Diagnosis and treatment of celiac
disease, gastroesophageal reflux disease,
eosinophilic esophagitis. Diabetes classification;
type 1 diabetes therapy and other forms of diabetes;
diabetological emergencies such as diabetic
ketoacidosis and hypoglycemia;
- Pediatric cardiology: congenital heart disease,
cardiomyopathy, arrhythmic diseases.
- Pediatric pneumology: pneumonia, bronchitis,
bronchiolitis and cystic fibroids.
- Pediatric nephrology: nephrosis and nephritic
syndrome, urinary tract infections, Haemolytic
uraemic syndrome
- Pediatric Vasculitis
Allergology: pathophysiology, diagnosis and therapy of bronchial asthma, food allergies and atopic dermatitis.
Pediatric Oncology: notions of diagnosis and therapy of pediatric cancers
Expected Learning Outcomes
To Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of the approach to the main diseases treated in the course in terms of differential diagnosis and therapy by demonstrating recognition of the peculiarities of the pediatric age and knowing how to put into practice the acquired knowledge.
