Concepts of nursing practice in the oncology and hematology area

Upon completion of the course, the student will be able to:
-design and implement a plan of care for a cancer patient in the different stages of disease.
The student will be provided with the essential concepts to know, understand and be able to apply the following skills :
- identify factors contributing to the development of malignancies, knowledge of prevention and early diagnosis in various clinical situations;
- plan care interventions in Nursing Diagnoses during each phase of disease and treatment; and
- design a Standard Care Plan during Chemotherapy and Radiotherapy.

The student should demonstrate autonomy in clinical judgment, communication skills to plan and describe the implementation of individualized care, using diagnostic reasoning (nursing process) and knowledge of anatomy and pathology independently.

Frontal and online, participatory lectures.
Small group work on analysis and discussion of clinical care cases in onco-hematology.

The examination consists of a written test and an oral test. the written test is designed to test the level of knowledge and understanding of the content of the disciplines covered.
- The written test, delivered online consists of 70 multiple choice questions concerning the medical disciplines. Passing this test (60 percent of the total questions) allows access to the oral test concerning the nursing disciplines. The oral test, which takes place 5 to 15 days after the written test, is aimed at assessing the student's ability to use diagnostic reasoning independently, using the knowledge learned and demonstrating that he or she is able to engage in a thorough discussion of care aspects peculiar to the person in the terminal phase of life.

Students at the end of the course will be able to:
- know The signs and symptoms of oncologic disease and resulting from treatments
- know the care strategies to be implemented in the various stages of disease
- be able to apply diagnostic reasoning, using the knowledge provided by the course, in identifying The needs of the oncology patient and the possible risks resulting from treatments
- To know how to formulate the care plan, with goals and interventions, for the oncology patient

Students at the end of the course will be able to:

- be able to present in oral form appropriate considerations of the diagnostic reasoning carried out and the resulting care plan designed, the method employed, the planned interventions, and the expected results.
