Course Contents
Knowledge of oral surgery notions is essential for the training of dental hygienists.
The course aims to provide skills
- in recognizing the main oral diseases subject to surgical activity,
- in treating patients with dentoalveolar trauma;
skills
- in assisting and assisting dentists in the surgical activity, from the preparation of the operating field to the assistance and management of surgical patients;
- in the behaviors to be implemented in emergency situations that may occur during the surgical activity;
skills
- in the collaborative skills indispensable in the management of emergencies resulting from surgical activity.

Learning Outcomes
The course aims to provide the student with the necessary elements to:
- know the semeiology of the main pathologies of oral surgery;
- knowing how to assist dentists in the surgical activity, from the preparation of the operating environment to the preparation of surgical instruments, from assisting and assisting in oral surgery to knowing how to deal with emergency situations resulting from the surgical activity.
Prerequisites
The course aims to provide the student with the necessary elements to:
- know the semeiology of the main pathologies of oral surgery;
the student must possess the knowledge deriving from the preparatory teachings of anatomy, histology, pharmacology, radiology, oral pathology, clinical odontostomatology and have acquired the skills gained from the internship.
Teaching Methods
The Course makes use of theoretical lectures implemented by integrative teaching lessons given to small groups with the exposure of clinical cases of the topics covered during the course.
During the internship, students must also attend outpatient clinics where surgical activities are performed.
Additional Information
The topics covered by the program of the Oral Surgery Course are illustrated ranging from the fundamental notions of surgical procedures to the operational implications directed to the various types of patients afferent to dental clinics.
Assessment Methods
The exam consists of a written (open questions or quiz) or oral test aimed at verifying the level of knowledge acquired and understanding of the course contents.
The written assignments are corrected in a collegial form and discussed with each individual student. During the interview, the student must demonstrate that he / she knows and is able to present the arguments in an understandable way; to have understood at least the fundamental concepts. The student must be able to establish connections between topics covered and other disciplines.
In the event of a negative result, it must recognize the mistakes made and then identify the correct answers.
Detailed Syllabus
Infection control. Asepsis and antisepsis in surgery.
Patient reception and preparation procedures. Barriers for the patient.
Information and consent.
Preparation of the operating environment, the operating field, the student and the operators (exposure control, hand washing, PPE)
Outline of anatomy of the oral cavity (cranial nerves and vessels of odontostomatological interest), of the teeth and of the periodontium.
Odontostomatological semeiotics (tools and methods): anamnestic collection and objective examination of the cephalic area and oral cavity:
Signs and symptoms most commonly found in the pathology of the mouth, attached organs and jaw bones:
Odontostomatological anesthesiology: materials and methods.
Exodontics: materials (surgical instruments: nomenclature and recognition) and methods (techniques). Simple, complex dental avulsions of impacted teeth, germectomies: local and systemic indications, accidents and complications.
Apicoectomy: indications, techniques, failures, retrograde obturation
Soft tissue surgery. Excisional and incisional biopsies: indications.
Frenulum and bridle surgery (outline).
Preprosthetic surgery in the edentulous patient (outline).
Dental trauma. Classifications, etiopathogenesis, symptoms, diagnosis, hints of therapy.
Post traumatic dental implants.
Tooth-facial trauma as signs of child maltreatment and abuse.
Complications and emergencies in oral surgery.
Management of the systemic and difficult-to-heal patient.
Containment protocols in the dental field of COVID-19 infection.
The student must acquire the ability to operate autonomously, as regards his role, both in routine and emergency situations.

The course aims to provide the student with specific theoretical knowledge related to oral surgery so that he can acquire the competence to apply them in clinical practice.
