Course Contents
1) GENERAL BACTERIOLOGY.
The bacterial cell: organization, structure and essential functions. Gram negative and Gram positive. Division, growth (cultivation methods). Bacterial metabolism.
Resident microbial flora: the microbiota.
Principles of bacterial virulence: Bacterial toxins: exotoxins and endotoxins; the spore; the capsule; the pili and the scourges; enzymes; the siderophores; the bacterial biofilm.
Elements of bacterial genetics: mutations and mechanisms of gene transfer: conjugation, transformation, transduction, transposition.
Mode of action of the main antibacterial drugs. Resistance to chemotherapeutics and antibiotics.
Principles of bacterial diagnostics
3) GENERAL VIROLOGY.
Nature, methods of study and classification of viruses. Composition and architecture of the viral particle. Cultivation and titration of viruses. Virus reports - cell. Multiplication of viruses: replication strategies. Virus-host relationships: acute, persistent, latent, slow infections. Cell transformation from viruses: oncogenic viruses. Pathogenic mechanisms in viral infections. Overview of immunoprophylaxis and antiviral chemotherapy. Principles of virological diagnostics.
4) MYCETES and PROTOZOA: GENERALITIES.
General information on mycetes and protozoa of medical importance.

Learning Outcomes
Building a mental model that allows to acquire for all the microorganisms of medical interest the main morphological, structural, biochemical and pathogenic characteristics necessary to understand the mechanism of the pathogenic action and the diagnostic identification techniques most commonly used in the microbiology laboratory .
Prerequisites
For the understanding of the course, students must be possess a minimum set of basic principles of cellular biology, chemistry, genetic, immunology and microbiology (minimal knowledge). They must also possess an English knowledge at level B1. Specific prerequisites are not foreseen.
Teaching Methods
All the educational material is uploaded on the site https://www.dir.uniupo.it/
The teaching methods used by the course are represented by:
- Presentations audio/video in MS-Power Point format
- Use of the fast and fun "Kahoot" learning platform useful for ongoing assessment of learning

The course is a total of 2 CFU (20 h) is organized in theoretical lectures, conducted in the classroom using power-point slides and Kahoot platform, on all topics of the course. These lessons include a continuous direct examination in the classroom of the level of understanding of the various topics dealt with through dialogue, questions and kahoot in order to stimulate motivation, curiosity, critical spirit, autonomy and involvement in the learning processes of students.

Assessment Methods
Since the number of students is high, the final evaluation test consists of a written exam, in an integrated way with the other disciplines and the other teachers of the course in the pre-established dates of the exams, consisting of:
- fifteen multiple choice questions (one correct answer option). The exam is passed with 50% of the correct answers for each module.
The final mark must not be less than 18; the maximum achievable score is 30 and Lode.
The questions relate to all the topics developed during the classroom lessons.
The objective of the exam consists in verifying the level of achievement of the previously indicated training objectives.
A moment will be devoted to the correction of the written tasks during which each student will be able to recognize the mistakes and identify the correct answers

Expected Learning Outcomes
LEARNING, KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING: At the end of the course, the student should demonstrate knowledge of the structure, substructure and biological properties of bacteria, viruses and fungi and have understood, within the time frame, the main mechanisms underlying the infectious processes cause of human pathology. It should also demonstrate knowledge of the main techniques used in bacteriological and virological diagnostics.
ABILITY TO APPLY KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING: The student should have acquired skills in the field of general microbiology.
TRANSVERSAL SKILLS: The student must also be able to have JUDGMENT AUTONOMY and SKILLS to COMMUNICATE and motivate in writing and in practice his / her procedural / experimental choices.
