Course Contents
The course will cover the main haematological diseases. The course will provide the tools for a critical interpretation of the complete blood count and differential and of the main coagulative findings that are relevant for a Biomedical Lab Technician.

Learning Outcomes
The aim of the course is to render the student able to know, interpret and analyse the main hematological topics of the course that are relevant for a Biomedical Lab Technician, with a critical attitude, as requested by the Dublin descriptor 3.

Assessment Methods
The exam will be in the context of the Integrated Course of which the Hematology course is part. The exam of Hematology will be based on 10 MCQs (4 possible answers, of which only 1 is correct), on the topics taught during classes
Detailed Syllabus
A. General part: Notions of hematopoiesis, general strategies of haematological diagnostics
(morphology-phenotype-genotype)

B. Diseases of red blood cells: Anaemia: definition, classification and general pathophysiology, bone marrow aplasia, myeloftisis, iron deficiency anaemia, folate deficiency anaemia, vitamin B12 deficiency anaemia; hemoglobinopathies: thalassemia, sickle cell disease; haemolytic anaemias: haemolytic anaemia of intrinsic cause (enzymatic erythropathies, red cell membrane defects) and extrinsic cause (immunoemolytic anaemias, macrongiopathic anaemias)

C. Oncohaematology: general concepts of pathophysiology and diagnostics; Acute myeloblastic and lymphoblastic leukaemia; Myeloproliferative neoplasms; myelodysplasia; Chronic lymphocytic leukaemia; Lymphomas; MGUS.

D. Diseases of haemostasis: classification and diagnostics; Thrombocytopenia; Congenital coagulation defects: haemophilia, von Willebrand's disease; Acquired coagulation defects (DIC, coagulation inhibitors); Thrombotic microangiopathies: thrombotic thrombocytopenic purpura, haemolytic-uremic syndrome; Hereditary thrombophilias

E. Hematopoietic stem cell transplant
Expected Learning Outcomes
At the end of the course, the student will be able to: i) recognize and interprete the most common and important lab findings of the main hematologic conditions; ii) allocate such findings in the context of the main diseases of the blood
