Course Contents
Contenuti Structure properites (configurational, conformazional, acid-base) of
organic compounds. Functional groups and main reaction types of
organic compounds. Non-polymeric biomolecules (carbohydrates, lipids,
amino acids).

Main concepts developed in the course of General Chemistry (chemical
bond, equilibria, kinetics and thermodynamics of chemical processes)

Credit 1: Structure and properties of organic compounds
1. General introduction to the chemical bond
2. Covalent, ionic and polar covalent chemical bonds: properties and geometry-1
3. Lewis structural formulas and formal charges and resonance formulas
4. Aromaticity
Credit 2: Functional groups, physical properties and nomenclature
5. Functional groups and their influence on physical and chemical properties (acidity and basicity)
6. Inter- and intra-molecular interactions and their effect on properties and reactivity
7. Nomenclature of organic compounds
Credit 3: Isomerism, conformation and stereochemistry analysis
8. Isomerism: definition and classification
9. Conformational analysis of acyclic and cyclic compounds. Configurational analysis: alkenes
10. Chirality and configurational analysis: diastereomerism and enantiomerism
