Course Contents
Lectures and laboratory exercises in quantitative analytical chemistry. Theoretical lessons to introduce the lab experiences and classroom exercises.

Learning Outcomes
Objective of the laboratory module is to supply abilities and knowledge on analytical laboratory unitary operations and performing the related calculations; knowledge of how to write a laboratory notebook and scientific reports. Abilities: the students will be able to correctly apply the analytical methods developing precision and accuracy; ability in writing a laboratory notebook and scientific reports. Communication skills: the students will be able to use a suitable chemical vocabulary in relation to the analytical techniques and methods applied, to write reports on the results of their analyses, to correctly communicate the results of analytical measurements, to clearly and concisely write a laboratory notebook. Ability of judgement: ability in drive conclusions from the results of the analytical measurements (with qualitative/quantitative responses). Learning skills: ability of critically using the available material to set up laboratory experiences.

Teaching Methods
Lectures, exercitations and discussions in the lab and in the classroom, notes of the teacher, PowerPoint presentations, lab analyses of unknown samples with final score, writing of scientific reports and of the laboratory notebook.
Additional Information
The control of learning during the course will be carried out through laboratory and classroom exercises and the periodic control of the laboratory notebook. Scores will be assigned to the results of the laboratory experiences (analyses) that will contribute to the final grade.
Assessment Methods
The exam consists in:
- lab activities: lab analysis of unknown samples with final score to evaluate the practical abilities; evaluation of the laboratory notebook and of the reports about the instrumental techniques applied, to evaluate the communication skills;
- written exam consisting in 8 - 12 questions about problems regarding the analytical techniques considered during the course, devoted to evaluate the theoretical/practical knowledge (exercises) and the ability of judgement (exercises where the student has to provide a choice or a judgement);
- oral exam consisting in 3 questions on the topics of the course, devoted to evaluate: the theoretical knowledge on the methods applied in lab, the communication skills (vocabulary and clarity in the exposition of the scientific topics), the autonomy of judgement and the learning skills (choose the best experimental strategy to solve a case study, ability to critically motive the choice).
Sufficiency is achieved by demonstrating that they possess the basic knowledge and skills on the topics covered by the course; excellence is achieved by demonstrating a strong critical sense and autonomy of judgment in proposing alternatives and making choices among different methods.
Detailed Syllabus
Instrumental analytical methods (electrochemical, chromatographic, spectrophotometric) and classical methods (volumetry). Write a clear, concise and effective laboratory notebook, write scientific reports, write test reports. Use of the available material to set up analytical strategies.

- know how to draw conclusions from the results of the chemical analyzes performed (with qualitative / quantitative answers).

Learning ability
- know how to use the critically supplied material to develop laboratory analyses.
