Learning Outcomes
The course aims at developing the ability to select the proper technique in relation to the specific problem and the critical sense of students with regards to a practical problem of analytical chemistry, through a series of experiences with the main instrumental analytical techniques and with the main methods of sample pre-treatment. Communication skills: the students will be able to use a suitable chemical vocabulary in relation to the analytical techniques described in the course. Abilities: the students will be able to select and apply the correct analytical technique to face practical problems. He will develop the ability in making judgements from the results obtained by the application of the analytical techniques and learn how to use new analytical methods.
Prerequisites
Good knowledge of basic analytical chemistry techniques.

Classroom lessons. Practice lessons in instrumental laboratories
Additional Information
During the laboratory experience, the state of progress of the project is periodically checked.
Assessment Methods
Evaluation is based on a relation that students will prepare and present at the end of the laboratory experience.
Detailed Syllabus
For the laboratory part the course will have preliminary lessons on the following topics: (1) how to solve an analytical chemistry problem; (2) bibliographic and data research methods; (3) sample pre-treatment methods; (4) handling of samples and reagents.
The laboratory experiences are divided into two modules: (1) the main sample pre-treatment methods: SPE, SPME, microwave mineralization, dry ashing, alkaline fusion; (2) the main instrumental analytical techniques: ICP-OES, ICP-MS, HPLC-MS, GC-MS. The experiences can be modulated according to the students' proposals.
