Course Contents
The course has the purpose of introducing the basic techniques of programming with the C language, with simple applications to experimental data analysis, as well as introducing the basic management of sensors with Arduino. The methods developed with practical computer sessions are oriented towards the analysis of experimental data in the classical physics setting.
(1) Basic techniques of programming with the C language
(2) Introducing the use of Arduino
(3) Basic concepts on measurement uncertainties
(4) Descriptive statistics (with practical sessions): mean, variance, histograms
(5) Correlations between observables, linear regression
(6) Applying programming in C to experimental data analysis
Learning Outcomes
The student must be able, given a simple problem of data analysis in the classical physics domain, to identify the proper computing techniques, implement them in a program written in the C language, compile it, run it and debug it.The student must be able to manage sensors (e.g. of velocity and temperature) via the Arduino Integrated Development Environment. The student must understand the basic facts concerning uncertainties on experimental data and the ways to represent data and their uncertainty.
Expected Learning Outcomes
- Knowledge and understanding:
acquiring basic techniques of programming in the C language; acquiring basic techniques of experimental data analysis, consisting of descriptive statistics, representation of relationships between observables, linear regression; an introduction to managing sensors using Arduino.
- Applying knowledge and understanding: given a task of acquisition and data analysis, the student must be able to identify techniques useful to solve it, write a corresponding C program, compile it and execute it.
- Learning skills: the student must acquire a sufficient mastery of scientific programming with the C language, of managing sensors with Arduino, of statistical data analysis, which will be useful in the subsequent physics laboratory courses.
