English Language Practical Classes 3 aim to develop lexical, grammatical, morpho-syntactic, and discursive skills (both encoding and decoding) of contemporary English, with a focus on Business English.

The general contents and specific topics, language skills and activities, the end-of-course examination, as well as the assessment criteria applied, refer to an advanced (B2+) C1 level of the CEFR (Common European Framework of Reference).

English Language 2 (English Language Practical Classes 2 + English Linguistics A).

Practical activities for decoding (reading comprehension), encoding (graph description writing), and report writing starting from an outline; oral interaction focussed on professional issues/settings.
Self-study and activities previously introduced during practical classes.

ALL THE STUDENTS SHOULD HAVE A COPY OF THE COMPULSORY TEXTS (see above).

Practical Classes will start in September 2023 and will end in June 2024.

ENGLISH LANGUAGE PRACTICAL CLASSES III YEAR
Written exam (2 hrs)

Your practical classes final mark is the average of all your grades: different sections of the written exam.
3rd-year students have to pass the reading comprehension, graph description, and report writing, (min. 18/30 for all of them).

With reference to the 'Intended learning objectives' (see below), the following grades correspond to different skills: 18-22/30-sufficient, 23-25/30-satisfying, 26-28/30 good, 29-30 lode-very good.

Oral interaction skills, language competence, and fluency (discourse structure, pronunciation, lexis, morphosyntax, and linguistic appropriateness) will be assessed by professor E. Lonati on the occasion of the English Linguistics B exam.

SYLLABUS VALID UNTIL: Winter Exam Session 2025 (January-February)

WRITTEN EXAM, 2.5 hrs:
1) Reading comprehension: 1000-word text, followed by lexical questions. 45’ minutes.
Reading comprehension activities aim to develop the student’s skills in reading-understanding various topics from different sources (newspapers, magazines, brochures, etc.), with a focus on commercial, financial, and legal texts (Business English), and professional interaction.
Exercises include multiple choice, collocations and phrases.
2) Graph description writing: 45’ minutes. This activity aims to test specialised lexis and expressions in describing data.
3) Report writing from an outline: 60’ minutes.
Students are required to write a 500/550-word report starting from commercial/business data to assess the ability to interpret the main issues, expose them, and provide a critical perspective. This activity also aims to assess the use of grammar, lexis, spelling, and punctuation in a well-organised text.

Oral interaction skills, language competence, and fluency (discourse structure, pronunciation, lexis, morphosyntax, and linguistic appropriateness) will be assessed by professor E. Lonati on the occasion of the English Linguistics B exam.

English Language Practical Classes 3 are based on the textbooks listed above, and on further materials analysed during the year (see DIR).

KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING
Students will be able to read and understand complex texts at an advanced level in contemporary English, of general contents and/or on professional issues (Business English).

APPLIED KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING
They will also be able to describe and interpret data from non-verbal sources (graphs), to write reports of medium length from an outline, and to have a conversation on general/current topics and/or professional issues.

Linguistic knowledge and language understanding will be used at a practical level, and applied to the many disciplinary research and professional contexts.
