English Language Practical Classes 2 aim to develop lexical, grammatical, morpho-syntactic, and discursive skills (both encoding and decoding) of contemporary English, with a focus on Business English.

The general contents and specific topics, language skills and activities, the end-of-course examination, as well as the assessment criteria applied, refer to an upper-intermediate B2-B2+ level of the CEFR (Common European Framework of Reference).

English Language 1 (English Language Practical Classes 1).

Practical activities for decoding (reading comprehension), encoding (summary writing), grammatical skills (exercises), oral interaction focussed on general and/or specific topics of everyday/professional communication (ex. current events).
Self-study and activities previously introduced during practical classes.

ALL THE STUDENTS SHOULD HAVE A COPY OF THE COMPULSORY TEXTS (see above).

Practical Classes will start in September 2021 and will end in June 2022.

ENGLISH LANGUAGE PRACTICAL CLASSES II YEAR
Written exam (2 hrs)

Your practical classes final mark is the average of all your grades: different sections of the written exam.

2nd-year students have to pass the reading comprehension, lexis and grammar exercises, and summary writing (min. 18/30 for all of them).

With reference to the 'Intended learning objectives' (see below), the following grades correspond to different skills: 18-22/30-sufficient, 23-25/30-satisfying, 26-28/30 good, 29-30 lode-very good.

Oral interaction skills, language competence, and fluency (discourse structure, pronunciation, lexis, morphosyntax, and linguistic appropriateness) will be assessed by professor E. Lonati on the occasion of the English Linguistics A exam.

SYLLABUS VALID UNTIL: Winter Exam Session 2024 (January-February)

WRITTEN EXAM:
1. Reading Comprehension of a 500/600-word text, followed by grammar exercises: 45’ minutes.
Reading comprehension activities aim to develop the student’s skills in reading-understanding various topics from different sources (newspapers, magazines, brochures, etc.), with a focus on commercial, financial, and legal texts (Business English), and professional interaction.
Exercises include multiple choice, collocations and phrases, True/False, gap-filling, form-filling, sentence transformation, find the mistake, etc.

2. Summary writing: 60’ minutes.
Starting from a 1000-word text of commercial/business contents, students will write a 200/250-word summary.
Summary writing aims to assess the student’s ability to read and understand the main issues of the source text, and to assess the use of grammar, lexis, spelling, and punctuation in a well-organised text.

Oral interaction skills, language competence, and fluency (discourse structure, pronunciation, lexis, morphosyntax, and linguistic appropriateness) will be assessed by professor E. Lonati on the occasion of the English Linguistics A exam.

English Language Practical Classes 2 are based on the textbooks listed above, and on further materials analysed during the year (see DIR).

KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING
Students will be able to read and understand texts of medium complexity in contemporary English, of general contents and/or on professional issues (Business English).

APPLIED KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING
They will also be able to summarise specialised texts, to write short/medium length paragraphs, and to have a conversation on general/current topics and/or professional issues.

Linguistic knowledge and language understanding will be used at a practical level, and applied to the many disciplinary research and professional contexts.
