Materials on the Dir platform

The aim of the course is to provide students with: 1) notions of the history and technique of translation; 2) an advanced level of linguistic competence, enhancing the ability to use monolingual vocabulary, as well as the grammatical notions and linguistic skills acquired during the three-year course; 3) the ability to analyse and translate Spanish texts of various types.

An adequate knowledge of the Spanish Language is required (higher level, C1)

Lectures, exercises with case discussions, use of the monolingual dictionary. In the second part of the module the students will be asked to apply the theoretical knowledge acquired during the II and III year, in the (pedagogical) context of the translation.
Students will be constantly invited to work on error, as a source of enrichment in language learning, and on linguistic self-awareness.
There will be individual activities, weekly, domestic and in class, with discussion of errors, and presentation of exemplary cases.
The different written tests, functional to the exam for difficulty and level of linguistic competence, will be corrected and returned by the teacher during the course.
The passages to be translated into Italian, belonging to different text types, will be uploaded to the Dir.

Written examination (2½ hours). It consists of:
1) two open questions on translation topics to be answered briefly but with linguistic precision; 2) Translation of a text from Spanish into Italian.
Theoretical awareness of the linguistic fact (and its formulation) will be assessed, as well as the conscious rendition in correct Italian of the text composed in the foreign idiom.
The final grade will result from the average of the two parts (theory/translation).
In order to pass the examination, the student must obtain at least 18/30 in both parts - if this is not the case, he/she will have to re-sit the entire paper in a subsequent appeal.
I) An examination will be assessed as excellent if it demonstrates: an organic and in-depth vision of the themes addressed in the course; developed capacity for analysis and synthesis; excellent mastery of the specific vocabulary and linguistic concepts; capacity for theoretical elaboration (also contrastive) through the rich use of relevant examples.
A paper will be assessed as fair if it demonstrates: an only sometimes mechanical knowledge of the subject; appropriate and correct language; the ability to analyse and synthesise; good use of exemplification.
A paper will be marked as sufficient if it demonstrates: basic knowledge of the syllabus (notions and method); basic and correct use of linguistic terminology; presentation of adequate examples in the treatment.
A paper will be assessed as insufficient if it demonstrates at least one of the following traits: important educational gaps; erroneous learning of notions/concepts or methodology; inappropriate language; purely mnemonic reproduction/listing of notions or definitions, lacking the required conceptual links; lack of orientation within the topic examined; absence or incorrect use of examples.
In the translation, the following will be assessed: a) the ability to recognise the linguistic phenomena peculiar to the source text; b) the ability to reproduce them in correct Italian, not conditioned by interlinguistic similarities (choice of linguistic equivalences); c) the use of the dictionary. d) A translation will be assessed as sufficient (or good or excellent, depending on the number of errors) if it presents no more than 15 serious errors - syntactic misunderstandings, morphological, lexical errors, errors in Italian.

Theory and technique of Spanish-Italian translation. Error and lingustic competence. Contrastivity and equivalence.
Translation practice on different texts (narrative texts, journalistic non-fiction).

Knowledge
- To perfect knowledge of Spanish syntax in a contrastive, Spanish-Italian perspective;
- To know the theory and technique of translation from Spanish into Italian.
Skills
- Being able to grasp the norm and variety of the Spanish language, in syntactic terms, in relation to the Italian language;
- Knowing how to use this knowledge for good interlingual translation.
- Being able to reflect on the characteristics and peculiarities of the two idioms involved in the translation process.
Transversal skills
- the ability to translate Spanish texts of various types correctly and in good Italian, recognising the structures of the source idiom
