GERMAN ROMANTICISM

The readings are indicative pending whether a German colleague will speak during the course. More specific information will be uploaded in January on DIR in the detailed course programme, in which the criticism to be studied will also be indicated.

Some lyrics or excerpts of prose texts by some major authors (e.g. some fragments by the Schlegel brothers or at least one Ode to the Night by Novalis) will be uploaded to DIR during the course.

Ability to outline the basic lines of the Romanticism, putting it in relation with different historical-cultural contexts. Ability to process in a critical way the information received during the course, relating ages and texts. Ability to make critical considerations, even personal ones, on the examined literary works and to analyze the central issues of the course.

Good knowledge of German for master students studying German. No prerequisites for others.

Lectures, critical reading, translation and commentary on texts, use of multimedia materials.

Critical literature and further information will be provided at the beginning of the course.

Non-attending students (i.e. not attending more than the half of the lessons) are requested to contact the teacher in order to get their detailed program by mail. Please read the texts before we will analyze them in the lessons, so you will be able to better understand the explanations and to participate in the discussion.

Oral examination in Italian and German with questions on the following topics:
- The historical and cultural context of the Romanticism, the authors and texts we deal with during the lessons as well as the ones analyzed in the critical essays. - 40% of the evaluation and 10% of the German skills evaluation.
- the skill of analyzing and interpreting texts, of processing in a critical way the information received during the course also about single writers or literary works in relation to the central topics of the course will be checked as well - 50% of the evaluation
- the ability to translate into Italian some excerpts of texts of primary literature will be checked– further 10% of the German skills evaluation
Evaluation will base on the ability to outline the basic lines of the course and of the Romanticism, on the knowledge and comprehension of texts also referring to the critical bibliography, and on the skill to expose the topics clearly in Italian and German as well as to translate from German into Italian.

Romanticism, which Goethe described as 'sick' in relation to 'healthy' Classicism, is one of the most significant phases of 19th century European literature. The course intends to outline a literary-historical and critical pathway through some of the most representative authors of German Romanticism (the Schlegel brothers, Novalis, Eichendorff, the Grimm brothers, E.T.A. Hoffmann and Chamisso) in order to clarify the theoretical foundations of the movement, its artistic-literary implications and its developments from the first Romantic School to its most advanced phase.

Knowledge of the topics and of the analyzed texts.
Ability to expose in Italian and German in a clear and exact way the central issues of the course, with references to the historical, cultural and literary and context of the literary works.
Ability to translate texts of primary literature into Italian.
