The course is focused on the legal study of issues concerning the environment and sustainable development, with reference to supranational, European and national legislation.

The course aims to provide students with a basic understanding of the principles governing environmental law, particularly with regard to sustainable development.

No prerequisite knowledge is required other than passing the final exam.

Teaching will be based on lectures, with analysis and discussion of concrete law case studies and presentations.

Students with disabilities, learning disabilities or special education needs, once they have contacted the University Staff, can refer to the tutor in charge of the course to define the examination modalities, concerning academic aspects.

The exam will be held in the traditional form of an oral examination, lasting about 15 minutes, consisting of a number of questions related to the topics covered in the course. The way in which the student articulates the answer, as well as the mastery of the concepts and the level of depth of the topic, will allow Professor to assess the achievement, or not, of the course objectives. Different modes may be provided for attending students.

The course will examine the following topics and it will be structured as follow: 1. general aspects of environmental law and sustainable development; 2. the sources of environmental law, both on domestic and EU and international levels; 3. the constitutional principles and rules governing the subject; 4. the environment as a legal asset; 5. the public subjects holding competences in the environmental field; 6. the division of competences between State, Regions and Local Governments in environmental matters; 7. the role of administrative authorities and technical sector bodies; 8. general overview of analysis of specific legal institutions provided for by the legal system (e.g. the EIA, environmental impact assessment) (to which is dedicated a separate teaching course); 9. green procurement; 10. environmental sustainability in the United Nations 2030 Agenda.

To achieve the knowledge and skills corresponding to the minimum sufficiency level, students will be asked to demonstrate that they have mastered the theory underpinning environmental and sustainable development law, as well as the general concepts of the topics covered in the course lectures; moreover, they have to demonstrate the acquisition of the theoretical-practical tools to better interpret the complexity of the subject.
