Study of the chemical equilibria in solution and the volumetric determinations. Some practical experiences in laboratory.

Learning Outcomes
Provide the notions on chemical equilibria in solution, qualitative and quantitative chemistry procedures. To enable students to perform the analytical methods of qualitative/quantitative analysis in the laboratory and provide them with the fundamental concepts for good laboratory practice.

Assessment Methods
chemical equilibria. Written test consisting in 5 or 6 exercises about the chemical equilibria in solution (acid-base, buffers, solubility, complexes, redox, competitive equilibria)
Detailed Syllabus
Equilibria in solution (acid-base, complexes, precipitation, redox); activity coefficient; volumetric determinations (titration curves, indicator systems, important titrations).
Quantitative methods: method validation, representation of the results (average, standard deviation, confidence interval and Statistical hypothesis testing), critical level, LOD, LOQ, calibration curve, internal standard method, standard addition method, single addition method.
Laboratory
ectures: brief introduction to laboratory experiences.
Individual and/or group laboratory exercises include:
• titration of copper by complexometric route
• determination of copper and zinc in one of its most common alloys: comparison of the results obtained by determination in UV-Vis spectrophotometry and titration.

- knowledge of the theoretical/practical bases of the main analytical techniques (chromatographic, elementary)
- knowledge of the performance indices of analytical methods

- be able to compare different techniques for the same purpose also through the analysis of analytical performance indices
