Learning Outcomes
Provide the basics on the operation and use of the most modern instrumental analytical techniques. To enable students to follow simple analytical methods in the laboratory and provide them with the fundamental concepts for good laboratory practice.

Detailed Syllabus
Introduction to chromatographic techniques: theory of theoretical plates, velocity theory, Van Deemter equation, parameters for the evaluation of the goodness of chromatographic separation: efficiency, resolution, scodaturation, width and asymmetry of peaks. Chromatographic separation mechanisms: adsorption, distribution, ion exchange, dimensional exclusion. Liquid chromatography and gas chromatography. HPLC instrumentation: pumps, sample introduction systems, columns, detectors. GC instrumentation: sample introduction systems, columns, detectors.
Introduction to spectroscopic techniques of atomic absorption and emission. Atomic flame absorption, graphite oven, inductively coupled plasma. Instrumentation used: hollow cathode lamp and discharge lamp without electrodes, atomization system, sample introduction, monochromators, detectors. Spectral interference, chemical, matrix effect. UV-vis spectroscopy: Lambert-Beer law and its deviations, instrumental components

- knowledge of unitary laboratory operations and the use of instrumental methods of analysis
Ability to apply knowledge and understanding - to be able to compare different techniques for the same purpose also through analysis of analytical performance indices
