The course aims to deepen and analyse from a political/legal perspective the role of the religious phenomenon, and more generally of both individual and organised beliefs, in today's liberal democracies.

For those attending examination material will be provided during the course

The goals are manifold:

1) To introduce an aspect of European public law

Developing transversal competences in the field of civic education: critical analysis; ability to read diversity empathically

3) Mediation and reasonable accommodation skills
4) Providing useful tools for responsible citize nship
5) ) Legal problem solving skills

Basic knowledge of: constitutional and private law

Lectures through extensive use of audio-visual material; guest lecturers; analysis of case law provided on moodle in the classroom

Account is taken of the needs of students with special educational needs (BES) or with specific learning disorders (DSA)

During the course: assessment of dialectical and legal reasoning skills;

During the examination: level of knowledge of the examined legal principles, historical categories and sources of law

The programme is divided into blocks. Each corresponds to a problem.

Topics of the individual blocks lock:

1) The metamorphosis of the concept of religion
2) The individual dimension of religious awareness
3) 2) The collective dimension of religious awareness
4) Religious minorities and pluralism. General prospective
5) Religious minorities and pluralism. Dissimulation as integration or as discrimination?
6) Systems for regulating relations between the state and conviction organisations. The Italian case
7) Systems for regulating relations between the state and conviction organisations. The Israel case

Knowledge of the branch of public law about the phenomena of religion and belief

2) Knowledge of the fundamental categories for responsible citizenship

3) Pedagogically having at least perceived, though not fully assimilated, the transversal competences required in pluralistic societies
