Identification of health needs of nephropathic patient. In particular:

-Identification of health needs concerning kidney disease and relative aspects such as: nephrological syndromes and kidney disease, chronic and acute kidney injury; nephrological diagnostic tools and renal biopsy, renal function, urinalysis, renal replacement therapy (dialysis and renal transplant).
Out of hospital management of nephropathic patient, with a focus on home hemodialysis (HHD) and peritoneal dialysis (PD). Telemedicine applications in dialysis and renal transplant.

After attending this Course the student, the student will be able to:

- Identify and describe signs and symptoms of kidney disorders, instrumental and biological exams aimed at analysing clinical picture
- Correlate signs and symptoms to different kidney disorders, identifying actual and potential complications
- Interpretation of clinical situation and decision making in response to nursing assistance needs of patient in different clinical pictures

know general principles of out of hospital management of nephropatic patient in dialysis or renal transplanted patient

In order to attend the exam it is necessary having passed exam of "scienze morfologiche" and having attended lessons for at least the minimum amount of hours required by current rules.

Employment of formal lessons as a teaching method, with possible support of sector's specialists.
The course is based on a series of formal lessons which deal with all topics described in the Program. Within each lesson several clinical cases are proposed based on prototypical clinical situations ("Case Vignettes"), in order to favour application of theoretical knowledge to clinical nursing practise. Discussion of these clinical cases develops in an interactive way and is structured through multiple choice questions which students are stimulated to cope with. This same pattern of Case Vignettes is also employed for final examination.
Association of presentation of nephrological topics with relative discussion of Case Vignettes stimulates the student to apply theoretical knowledge to nursing practise with critical attitude and autonomy of judgement and to employ knowledge of basic principles for further progress of knowledge of renal disorders, with a specific focus on identification of signs and symptoms of renal disease and management of renal disorders within the peculiar setting of pregnancy.
Teaching tools are Videoprojector and PCs with Internet connection, which can be found in the Nephrology and Transplant Unit, where a Nephrological library and main texts and nephrological reviews are also available for further study.

Final exam is performed through written proof based on 60 multiple-choice questions with only one correct option, 24 of which of generala and sugical interest and the remaining ones relative to specialties. Structure with clinical cases with questions concerning all topics of teaching. Questions cover both basic aspects of theoretical knowledge and short clinical cases (Case Vignettes) in order to verify ability to apply knowledge to specific clinical settings.

Principles of anatomy and renal physiology.
Basis of renal semeiotics.
Urinalysis and urinary sediment.
Study of renal function.
Renal ultrasound and other instrumental exams to study renal disorders. Renal biopsy.
The nephrological syndromes: isolated urinary abnormalities, nephrotic syndrome, acute nephritic syndrome, rapidly progressive syndrome; acute kidney injury (AKI) and chronic kidney disease (CKD).
Primary and secondary glomerulonephritis. Tubulo-interstitial and vascular nephropathies
Acute kidney injury (AKI). Chronic kidney disease (CKD). Progression of chronic renal failure. Uremic syndrome. Preparation for dialysis.
Hemodialysis: general principles and indications. Arterial-venous fistula for hemodialysis. Management of hemodialysis patient.
Peritoneal dialysis: general principles and indications. Management of hemodialysis patient.
Renal transplant. General principles and indications. Management of renal transplant patient. The immunosuppressive therapy. Complications of renal transplant. Reabilitation after renal transplant.
Out of hospital management of nephropathis patient with advanced CKD, on dialysis and with a renal transplant. Telemedicine applications in dialysis and transplant.

After attending the Course the student is expected to be able to know, identify and correlate signs and symptoms of renal disease and to adequatley deal with out of hospistal management of dialysis or renal transplanted patient, knowing the principles of Telemedicine and of its applications in Nephrology.
