The course is divided into two parts. The first part aims to delve deeper
into the link between health, medicine and society from a sociological
perspective. The cognitive path will pay particular attention to the
following themes: care relationships and narrative approach, social health
inequalities, integration of social and health services. The second part will
delve into the concept of the stigmatization of mental illness and social
action to promote mental health

The course aims to provide theoretical and practical knowledge on the
sociology of health and medicine through three study perspectives:
micro, meso and macro. Specifically, the course aims to promote the
following specific training objectives in the student: - knowing how to
distinguish the main sociological theories relating to the social
construction of the body and the construction of illness: - knowing how to
use the life course approach in reading and interpretation of people's
health and illness paths: - knowing how to use the experience of illness as
an object of research and analysis in people's life paths: - knowing how to
use the concepts of mental suffering, madness and disability: - knowing
how to distinguish between practices and care relationships in different
healthcare settings: - knowing how to interpret the processes of change
in family relationships in the face of the experience of illness: - knowing
how to read the territorial differences in the provision of social and health
services: - knowing how to distinguish the processes of change in
organizational practices and in health professions: - knowing how to
understand social inequalities in health

The teaching involves the holding of frontal lessons, with the aid of
PowerPoint presentations, in which the themes illustrated in the
reference texts will be explained, integrated and explored in depth and
with the possibility of teacher/student interaction for critical analysis,
debate and request for clarifications.

Students with disabilities, learning disabilities or special education needs, once they have contacted the University Staff, can refer to the tutor in charge of the course to define the examination modalities, concerning academic aspects.

The learning assessment takes place through a single profit exam of all the subjects related to the course. The test consists of 54 multiple choice questions, of which only one is correct, and 3 open questions, in the form of a case in which the students will have to apply the knowledge acquired. The 3 open questions will focus on a case of Therapeutic Education, one of Family and Community Nursing and one of Mental Health Nursing. For the evaluation of the open questions, teachers have specific correction grids available.
The correct multiple choice questions are worth 1 point, the open questions allow you to acquire a maximum of 10 points per question. Maximum total score 84 points.
The test is passed if you obtain 60% of the total score.
The students have 90 minutes to complete the test.
The test takes place in person on an online platform.

Sociology of Health will be analysed, with particular reference to the
following issues at a micro, meso and macro level.
At a micro level the course will address the following themes: - the main
sociological theories relating to the social construction of the body and
the construction of illness: - the life course approach in reading and
interpreting people's health and illness paths: - l the experience of illness
as an object of sociological research and analysis in people's life paths: -
the concepts of mental suffering, madness and disability: - care practices
and relationships in different healthcare settings.
At the meso level the course will deal with the following topics: - the
processes of change in family relationships in the face of the experience
of illness: - the territorial differences in the provision of social and health
services: - the processes of change in organizational practices and health
professions.
At a macro level the course will address these issues: - social inequalities
in health.
In the second part the following topics will be covered: - stigma and social
exclusion in mental illnesses: - social action to promote mental health.

1 Knowledge and understanding: knowledge of the main lines of debate
in the sociology of health and medicine.
2 Making judgements: ability to critically evaluate the application of
concepts to social practices, interpreting situations and contexts of health
and illness.
3 Ability to learn: good autonomy in the ability to analyze the topic of
health and illness.
