Course Contents
Characteristics of Hygiene, Public Health, and Preventive Medicine. The Public Health model for solving health problems: problem definition, etiologic diagnosis, search of effective interventions, implementation. Risk factors and risk behaviors. The natural history model: primary and secondary prevention interventions; health promotion, education, vaccines, screening. The health inequalities. The health profile of migrants. The Infectious Risk and methods of disinfection. Hygiene of food. The environmental health risks. LEA and healthcare of frail population subgroups at the local level.

Learning Outcomes
The course aims to provide the student the basis of general Hygiene, Public Health, and Preventive Medicine and to introduce the students to specialistic content (e.g. risks related to food and nutrition, environment, infectious, primary and secondary prevention measures).
Prerequisites
Basic knowledge of physics, chemistry and biology. Relation with contents of other basic and clinical disciplines (e.g. pathology and microbiology)
Teaching Methods
Lectures with link to teledidactic for other location of the Nursing School.
MS Power Point presentations; use of internet websites.
Practical exercises. Participation in class of Public Health experts.
Simulation of exam test made available on DIR exams website.
Additional Information
30 hours of interactive lectures on hygienistic contents.

Assessment Methods
The exam will consist in a written test including 30 multiple choice questions. Duration 30 minutes. Only one correct answer.
Score for passing the exam: 18 correct answers.
No penalization for incorrect answers.
No oral exam.
It will be possible for students with physical disabilities, Learning Disabilities or Special Education Needs to use specific additional tools (conceptual schems, additional time, other measures). It is recommended to submit conceptual schems to teacher evaluation and approval some days before the exam, in order to allow any changes.
A simulation of the exam test is made available on DIR esami website one week before the date of the exam.
Detailed Syllabus
1. The Public Health model; models for defining priorities of intervention and problem solution
2. Risk factors and risk behaviors; prevention and health promotion
3. The natural history model of a disease and the prevention interventions
4. Strategies of immunization of the population. Compulsory and recommended vaccines (National Prevention Plan and Vaccine calendar). Surveillance of vaccination and the problem of vaccine hesitancy
5. Secondary prevention interventions: cancer screening and validity measures of screening tests
6. Health inequalities
7. The health of frail subgroups of the population: the migrants
8. Infectious Risk and the Healthcare Associated Infections. Management of clinical risk and safety of patients and healthcare providers. Asepsis, disinfection, and sterilization methods
9. Food hygiene: contamination, degradation, preservation. Food safety; HACCP protocol
10. Environmental health risks, and pollutants: Pb, No2, So2, O3, PM10, radon, asbestos, noise; climate change; electromagnetic fields; indoor environmental risks: Legionellosis, CO
11. LEA and healthcare of frail subgroups of the population at the local level.
Expected Learning Outcomes
Knowledge and understanding:
- to acquire knowledge on general hygiene, preventive medicine, and public health;
- to know and understand the model for the solution of health problems according to public health approach;
- to know risk factors and health determinants;
- to know methods for preventing infectious diseases;
- to know the characteristics of population screening for cancer diseases;
- to know principles of asepsis, disinfection and sterilization;
- to know the health risks related to food;
- to know the health risks related to environment;
- to acquire knowledge, understanding and ability to speak using the scientific language.

Ability to apply knowledge and understanding:
- to describe the characteristics of the model for solving health problems according to public health approach;
- to draw the natural history of a disease, describing risk factors and prevention interventions to be applied in the various phases of life;
- to describe the strategies for immunization of children, adults and subgroups at risk;
- to describe the characteristics of the population cancer screening;
- to describe the environmental health risks;
- to discuss the impact of inequalities on the health of various population subgroups;
- to discuss the health profile of frail population subgroups (migrants, old people)

Autonomy of judgment
- to evaluate the appropriateness and the reliability of measures to control health risks related to water, food, infections, indoor and outdoor environment, risk factors and risk behaviors

- to describe scientific data by interpreting the phenomena in the light of the knowledge acquired;
