By the end of the course students can:
1 - describe the general organization of healthcare professions nowadays;
2 - recognize nursing responsibility and its complementarity with other professions, discuss principles of interprofessional collaboration;
3 - describe relationship between professionalization and scientific development of healthcare professions;
4 - describe the concept of need for nursing assistance;
5 - distinguish nursing role and skills from those of other health and/or social operators and/or professionals;
6 - consider the nursing profession history to understand the current profession;
7 - understand the main interprofessional regulations regarding liability.

Participated frontal lesson. Discussion about the main subjects through debates between teachers and students. Presentation of summary and explanatory cards about the educational subjects and the lesson contents in PowerPoint format.

Students with disabilities, learning disabilities or special education needs, once they have contacted the University Staff, can refer to the tutor in charge of the course to define the examination modalities, concerning academic aspects.

The exam consists of a quiz test (10 multiple choice questions, with only one correct answer) and an oral test. To be admitted to the oral exam, the quiz test pass is required (60% of correct answers). The written test lasts 10 minutes. To pass the oral exam, students must demonstrate sufficient knowledge and competence of all topics and the mark is reported in thirtieths. To achieve 30/30 cum laude, students must demonstrate excellent knowledge of all course topics. The oral exam mark determines the mark of the integrated course.

2 - The professional profile of healthcare professions. Meaning in regulatory context: practice e training of healthcare professionals. The professional profile of nurses (DM 739/94). The points in common with the professional profile of professional educators (DM 520/98). The concept of professional identity, collaboration, shared responsibility.
3 - Participation in the overall health need definition and integrated role of healthcare and social professions. Outline of development phases of Meleis's professional disciplinary nursing mindset. Professionalization process of healthcare professions. Outline of the nursing care history and of the rehabilitation and educational profession development. The three schools of thought of nursing care theories.
4 - The nursing profession method: the nursing care process. The concept of need for nursing care. The technical, relational and educational nature of preventive, curative, palliative and rehabilitative nursing care. Preventive, assistance and educational functions of nursing. Taking care of people and families. The caregivers.
5 - The results of professional practice and its operational and ethical consequences: the concept of result measurement. Professional responsibility: outline of the Gelli-Bianco law. Delegation and attribution.
6 - Healthcare documentation. The integrated medical record.
7- Management of professional role reciprocity within the healthcare team. Relationship management with patients, with the team and management of conflict and stress.
8 - Outline of family and community nursing and of possible collaborative developments.

"Integrating the gender dimension"
In the course of the lectures, the contribution of gender to the professions of nursing and nursing education will be addressed, as these professions are concerned with the care of people. The influence of biological (defined by sex) and socio-economic (defined by gender) differences on the health and disease status of each person will be discussed: according to the WHO, men and women often have different incidence, symptoms and response to treatment, and also different responses to access to care, with significant gender inequalities. When describing work contexts, the lessons will mention the differences related to the world of work and its organisation, with all the different consequences that these situations have on gender differences.

- discuss healthcare professions-specific principles and logic in compliance with their profile and regulatory constraints;
- describe the professionalization process of healthcare professions;
- distinguish nursing role and skills from those of other healthcare operators and/or professionals;
- understand and discuss the concept of need and the nursing assistance need;
- understand the fields of intervention of nurses, independently and in collaboration with other professionals.

By the end of the integrated course students can:
- take their own responsibility according to the role identity and in compliance with the normative principles of professional practice and training;
- take decisions through a professional approach aimed at resolving patients' problems;
- choose scope, limits, method and tools of professional action in relation with other professions.

- use appropriate terminology for discussing professional- and professional identity-related issues.
