The course will cover the following topics

- Assessment of absolute vs comparative risk-benefit profile
- Introduction to Health Technology Assessment and Economic Evaluation
- Price setting and reimbursement processes for health technologies
- Applications in Dermatology

There is not a single textbook. Readings for each class will be presented during the first lesson.
Learning Outcomes
This course provides students with an understanding of the dynamics of the health technologies markets from perspectives of Regulatory Authorities, Health Technology Assessment Agencies, Payers and the Industry.
After a successful completion of the course, students are expected to better understand which are the market / payers requirements, thus addressing
the research and development trajectories looking at the future launch into the market.

Teaching Methods
The course is organized in traditional lectures, exercises / simulations on
economic evaluations, and groups work.

Grading is based on:
- Final exam (open questionnaire) (60% of total grade)
- Groups work (40% of total grade)

Healthcare technologies markets: general trends and regulation.
- Healthcare systems and payers of healthcare technologies: Government, Social Insurance, Private Insurance, Patients (out-of-pocket).
- Presentation of groups work.
- Consumer goods and market mechanisms.
- Absolute assessment vs comparative assessment of health technologies (how, whom and for what).
- Price and reimbursement of medicines and medical devices.
- Health Technology Assessment.
- Economic evaluation: cost-effectiveness and budget impact analysis.
- Economic evaluation and pricing strategies: simulation on a dermatological medicine.
- Groups work presentations.

Understanding healthcare technologies markets.
Understanding how market trends can affect research and development
investments.
Having an introductory knowledge of comparative assessment and
economic evaluation of healthcare technologies.
Applying this knowledge to the relevant products (dermatological drugs
and devices; cosmetics).
Integrating scientific competences with knowledge of economics and
managerial tools.
Understanding how to work in a group and to discuss case studies.
