Course Contents
The course aims to provide a basic understanding of industrial organic chemistry. In particular, the main industrial synthesis of intermediates, monomers and polymers, and some basic chemical and physical properties of polymeric materials will be discussed. Learning Outcomes
To provide students with the knowledge of the basic processes of industrial chemistry. Skills: Students learn to recognize the main polymers. Communication skills: the students will be able to use a suitable chemical vocabulary in relation to the course arguments and methods treated during the course. The course has also the objective to develop his autonomous learning skills and ability in making judgements and discussing the arguments of the course.

Additional Information
During the course, at the end of each key topic, the students will be involved in solving exercises and problems. At the end of the course two hours will be used for the solution of all problems concerning the topics of the course.

Assessment Methods
Written exam comprising one numerical exercise (to assess student learning) and three free-response questions (to evaluate the knowledge and independence of judgment through the request to express a judgment or make a choice).
Optional oral exam, comprising comprising two free-response questions to evaluate the critical sense, communication skills and the ability to learn.
Sufficiency is achieved by demonstrating basic knowledge and skills and appropriate language; excellence is achieved by demonstrating a strong critical sense, solid knowledge and skills.
Detailed Syllabus
Definition and nomenclature of polymers. Molecular weight and mass distribution. Definition, analysis of end groups, gel permeation. Chemical structure and morphology of polymers. Stereochemistry, crystalline, glassy state, the rubber elasticity, linear polymers, branched and crosslinked. Polycondensation. Mechanism of the polymerization process by polycondensation: Nylon, PET, aramid polymers, silicones, polyamides, polycarbonates, epoxy resins, bakelite, alkyd resins, glass fiber reinforced resins, amino paint. Polyaddition polymers. Mechanism of the radical polyaddition, cationic and anionic initiation, Ziegler Natta polymerization. Polystyrene, polyethylene, polypropylene, PVC, polyacrylates and acrylic copolymers, polymethylmethacrylate, polyvinylpyrrolidone. Copolymers. Statistical and block copolymers, copolymerization equation, preparation and properties of copolymers ABS, SBR, SBS.

- know how to use an appropriate chemical vocabulary in relation to the topics covered in the course.

- knowing how to learn autonomously using the supplied material autonomously to identify synthetic strategies
Autonomy of judgment:
- apply critical sense in order to make comparative choices and express judgments, knowing how to support discussions on issues relevant to the topics dealt with.
