Course Contents
The course aims to provide the basic elements for laboratory methods. A general part will be discussed, including the principles of the different methods, and a specialist part with the aim of illustrating the main diagnostic processes in the main diseases.

Assessment Methods
Oral examination: the oral exam consists of questions about the program covered in class and the goal of the examination is to verify the student's learning and reasoning skills. The student can reach sufficiency by demonstrating to have learnt the rudiments of the topics in the program, while for excellence it is necessary to demonstrate not only a thorough knowledge of the topics covered, but also reasoning skills and language properties (appropriate terminology, synthesis skills).
Detailed Syllabus
Introduction to laboratory medicine: organization of the clinical laboratory, role of laboratory medicine, appropriateness, precision medicine.
General concepts in laboratory medicine: the biological sample, pre-analytical, analytical and post-analytical phase.
Quality of the result: principles of statistics and applications in laboratory medicine, CQI and EQA
Analytical methods: Photometry, Immunometry, Separative techniques:RIA, Turbidimetry, Fluorimetry, Nephelometry, Luminometry, Enzyme immunoassays, Complement fixation, Electrophoresis, Chromatography, Spectrometry and their applications.
Molecular diagnostics and clinical applications (early, disease, carrier, prenatal diagnosis). Principles of cytogenetic diagnostics.
Cytometry, flow cytometry and applications in haematological diagnostics.
Applications of immunometric methods to human pathologies: Autoimmunity; Allergology, Sero-virological investigations.
Applications of electrophoresis: study of serum proteins.
Applications of spectrometry and chromatography: the toxicology laboratory.
Chemistry and analytical biochemistry: hydroelectrolytic balance, blood gas analysis, organ function tests, markers of metabolic processes and their pathologies (eg diabetes), markers of inflammation and sepsis.
Chemical-physical and morphological examination of the urine.
Coagulation diagnostics and approach to thrombophilia.
Blood groups and transfusion medicine.
The efficiency of the clinical laboratory: the CoreLab approach and emergency tests.
The medicine of the future: the omics sciences.
Expected Learning Outcomes
Acquire knowledge of the main diagnostic techniques in use in the different fields of laboratory medicine. Knowledge of the main diagnostic paths with interpretative ability of the result
