Learning Outcomes
The course aims at providing the knowledge concerning advanced applications of analytical chemistry. Communication skills: the students will be able to use a suitable chemical vocabulary in relation to the analytical techniques described in the course. Abilities: the students will be able to select and apply the correct analytical technique to face practical problems. He will develop the ability in making judgements from the results obtained by the application of the analytical techniques and learn how to use new analytical methods.
Prerequisites
Good knowledge of basic analytical chemistry techniques.
Teaching Methods
Classroom lessons. Practice lessons in instrumental laboratories
Additional Information
The final examination will be the only learning control.
Students with physical disabilities, Learning Disabilities or Special Education Needs can request specific services and tools via the Staff Sviluppo e Coordinamento Carriere e Servizi alle Studentesse e agli Studenti, consulting the University webpage: https://www.uniupo.it/en/services/servicesstudents-physical-or-learning-disabilities.
Students with disabilities, learning disabilities or special education needs, once they have contacted the University Staff, can refer to the tutor in charge of the course to define the examination modalities, concerning academic aspects.
Assessment Methods
Evaluation is based on an oral examination (the number of questions varies according to the preparation of the candidates).
Detailed Syllabus
The course deals with advanced analytical techniques, including Raman/SERS spectroscopy, diffuse reflectance spectrophotometry with optical fibers, spectrofluorimetry with optical fibers, X-ray fluorescence spectrometry, surface techniques, isotopic analysis; techniques for dating, authentication, conservation, study of the origin and technological study of ancient and modern materials.
It also introduces modern analytical hyphenated techniques based on mass spectrometry and the strategies to be adopted when analyzing particularly complex samples
During the course are treated: ambient mass spectrometry, cold plasma sources, DART, REIMS. DESI ionization, MALDI (interfacing with LC eimaging), Fast GC and Ultra Fast GC. Multidimensional GC. The matrix effect in LC-MS is explained: strategies for recognizing, quantifying and minimizing it. Micro and nano LC. Nano electrospray. Chip-nano-LC.
For the laboratory part: preliminary lessons on the following topics: (1) how to solve an analytical chemistry problem; (2) bibliographic and data research methods; (3) sample pre-treatment methods; (4) handling of samples and reagents.
Expected Learning Outcomes
Ability in identifying the most suitable technique for a specific analytical problem
