Written test (duration 3 hours) and oral test (duration 20 minutes) on different days.
The written test (marked in thirtieths) consists of a 120-point test. The test covers morphology/phonology by means of closed questions (3/4 of the test) and includes the analysis (1/4 of the test) of a corpus taken from the musical ‘Notre Dame de Paris’ and/or from another corpus analysed during the course. Each question corresponds to a 1/4 point. The written test tests knowledge and comprehension (1, 2, 3); the ability to apply knowledge and comprehension (1,); The minimum mark for passing the written test and entering the oral test is 18/30.
The oral test (grade expressed in thirtieths) covers, for students of the BA Modern Foreign Languages degree, theoretical issues dealt with during the course (substrat gaulois, superstrat francique etc.) and individual research work assigned during the course (see DIR). The oral examination tests the ability to apply knowledge and understanding (3); the expression of judgements (1); communication skills (1, 2).
For students enrolled in the Master's Degree in Languages Culture Tourism (LM49), the oral test focuses on the critical reading of D. Hatuelle's textbook, ‘Tourisme en action’. The student will have to prove that he/she can read, comment on and translate into Italian 30 sheets of his/her choice (see ability to apply knowledge and comprehension: 3; expression of judgement: 1; communication skills: 1, 2).
An individual assignment will be given during the course (see study skills:1, 3, 4), which is compulsory for the oral test. The final grade is the average of the written and oral examination. The oral examination will be graded as follows: 18 to 21 for a paper demonstrating only sufficient achievement of the identified objectives; 22 to 25 for a paper demonstrating fair achievement of the identified objectives; 26 to 28 for a paper demonstrating good achievement of the identified objectives; 29 to 30 for a paper demonstrating very good achievement of the identified objectives; and 30 cum laude will reward excellent competence in all the identified areas.

Detailed information regarding the examination procedure, material relating to the various activities carried out in the course, exercises to be completed, examples and corrections of written tests, as well as the weekly lesson register will be available on DIR.
Communication of assessments: the grade for the written test (sum of the grade for the written test and the grade for the oral test) will be communicated via the ‘Esse3 - IT Services’ IT platform. The mark for the oral test will be communicated during the examination. The final grade in French Linguistics A, for students enrolled in LSM and LCT, forms part of the integrated examination in French Language II.

After a presentation of the French vocabulary from a diachronic approach (substrat gaulois, superstrat francique, adstrats, etc.), the course will focus, in a first didactic session, on the morphological mechanisms at work in the creation of the French lexicon; in a second sequence, on the presentation of various phonological and semantic phenomena. The following main morphological phenomena will be examined: doublets, which demonstrate the coexistence of a popular and learned process of formation; antonomasia; compound word construction and of Greco-Latin origin, including hybrid forms; and derivation (préfixation, suffixation, dérivés parasynthétiques, nominalization à suffixe zéro, verbes factitifs et fréquentatifs). The morphological description will be followed by a reflection on the phenomena of homography, homophony, homonymy, and paronomasia, with an application in the “jeux de mots” field and the advertising slogan. Finally, "faux-amis" (French - Italian) will be examined. The illustrative corpus, which will accompany each teaching sequence, consists of songs from the musical "Notre Dame de Paris" (Luc Palodon and R. Cocciante) based on Victor Hugo's novel of the same name, as well as sequences from various musical and film adaptations of the novel. Exercises of various kinds (translations, etymological research on the Trésor de la Langue Française Informatisée (ATILF), vocabulary worksheets, creative writing) are planned as part of the course.

- Be aware of the morphological mechanisms at work in the creation of the French lexicon, both in a diachronic and synchronic approach. Recognize and be able to explain lexical derivation and composition.
- Apply acquired knowledge in both written production (mastery of spelling) and oral production (correct pronunciation), as well as in the individual analysis of corpora of various kinds, written and oral.
- Enrich vocabulary.
- Writing short creative texts.
- Read productively the indicated essay.
- Use DIR consistently and independently.
- Learn to carry out lexicological research on the Trésor de la Langue Française Informatisée (ATILF).
