The first objective of the course is to provide the student with the basic
tools
of dialectological analysis and variational linguistics. Second objective
more advanced, is to place the student in a position to apply and
autonomously and consciously develop the notions and methodologies
learned to linguistic reasoning on theoretical and empirical data related
to the
language/variety/dialect continuum and its ethnoscientific classifications.
Finally, the third objective is to
enable the student to deal with teaching methodologies for
the teaching of linguistics from the topics covered by the course

Given the monographic, seminar and advanced nature of the course,
attendance is
highly recommended; it is possible to follow the course and then take the
exam only after having already
passed successfully General Linguistics A.
This program is valid until the February exam session
2026, after which everyone is required to ask the teacher for a new one
updated program.

Lectures and online teaching (DIR); the material in DIR is, however, only
and exclusively an aid and does NOT in any way replace the texts
indicated in the programme bibliography. During the lessons, the active
involvement of students through analysis and commentary of
linguistic and ethnological data, even with short term papers and reports,
in order to develop the ability to analyze material
diachronic and synchronic, the assimilation of teaching methodologies
advanced general linguistics and specific communication skills

Oral examination lasting approximately 30-45 minutes. The examination
will be passed when the grade is 18/30 or higher. During the examination
it is possible to withdraw and at the end of the examination to reject the
grade if positive; the grade accepted on the spot can no longer be
changed. The formulation of the overall grade will be based on the
assessment of the appropriate use of the specific metalanguage and the
accuracy and appropriateness of the answers to the questions on the
texts indicated in the syllabus and in class. Honours will be awarded on
the basis of an assessment of in-depth and independent elaboration
skills. In accordance with Art. 35 of the University Teaching Regulations,
students may sit for the same examination no more than three times in
one academic year.

The course programme will focus on the analysis of the sociolinguistic
and ethnolinguistic continuum between languages, language varieties
and dialects. Particular attention will be paid to the Italian situation and
will focus on the
different characteristics of regional varieties of Italian, varieties of
Italian on the border between language and dialects (colloquial Italian,
Italian
popular Italian, Italian of emigrants, Italian of radio and television)
and on Italian dialects (bilingualism/diglossia), including those of eastern
Piedmont; proverbs as a form of ethnoscience classification will then be
addressed: its history, diffusion, classification and usage through a
description of their sociolinguistics and pragmatics.

ABILITY TO APPLY KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING: Knowledge
recognize at least three of the linguistic phenomena and characteristics
that characterize a specific natural-historical language, a specific
dialect, a specific variety (phonetically and phonologically,
morphological, lexical, semantic, syntactic, but also pragmatic e
textual), evaluating the characteristics identified in the framework of a
diachronic and synchronic sociolinguistic, ethnolinguistic and
ethnoscientific continuum.
MAKING JUDGMENTS: Knowing how to set up and deal with an analysis
linguistic-dialectological in an autonomous and appropriate way
of the proposed examples, proposing his own as a further one
exemplification. COMMUNICATION SKILLS: knowing how to express the
knowledge learned using terminology with awareness
specific metalinguistics. LEARNING SKILLS: To know
deepen the topics presented and develop analytical skills
criticism of the theoretical references and their application
concrete to the texts and proverbs examined.
