The course is divided into two parts: the module of SPANISH PHONETICS, PHONOLOGY AND ORTHOGRAPHY [15 hours], held by Professor Matteo Mancinelli, is mainly theoretical and focuses on Spanish phonetics, phonology, and orthography; the module of SPANISH LANGUAGE TRAINING [96 hours], held by native-speaker lecturers, will focus on Spanish grammar [CEFR B1 level] and Iberian civilization.

The module of SPANISH PHONETICS, PHONOLOGY AND ORTHOGRAPHY aims at providing students with theoretical and analytical means to examine the Spanish phonetic, phonological and orthographic system, also from a contrastive perspective [with Italian]. *** The module of SPANISH LANGUAGE TRAINING aims at practising and improving passive and active linguistic skills [reading, listening, writing and speaking]. Particularly, the aim is the acquisition of basic knowledge and competences that permit students to comprehend and produce oral and written texts, and to properly use Spanish grammar according to CEFR B1 level.

SPANISH PHONETICS, PHONOLOGY AND ORTHOGRAPHY: lectures and seminars with students participation. *** SPANISH LANGUAGE TRAINING: practical activities, grammar exercises, dictation exercises, writing activities, reading comprehension and conversation.

Lectures and course contents of groups A, B and C are only for students from LINGUE. Students from LETTERE, FILOSOFIA E COMUNICAZIONE, TURISMO and other Degrees other than LINGUE must, instead, follow lectures and course contents of group D. *** The two modules of SPANISH PHONETICS, PHONOLOGY AND ORTHOGRAPHY and SPANISH LANGUAGE TRAINING will start at the beginning of the 1st semester. However, each of them has specific timetables and group partitions. Attendance is highly recommended. *** No level test is required: all groups are for beginners. Students can choose one of the three groups of SPANISH LANGUAGE TRAINING, taking into account their own timetable. As for the module of SPANISH PHONETICS, PHONOLOGY AND ORTHOGRAPHY, students of groups A, B and C will be gathered in one single group. *** Students with physical disabilities, Learning Disabilities or Special Education Needs can request specific services and tools via the Staff Sviluppo e Coordinamento Carriere e Servizi alle Studentesse e agli Studenti, consulting the University webpage: https://www.uniupo.it/en/services/services-students-physical-or-learning-disabilities. The acquisition of the course’s theoretical contents and competences will be assessed through the following mandatory exams: 1) DICTATION and WRITTEN TEST on Spanish grammar and civilization [duration: 3 hours], which consists of approximately 5-10 grammar exercises [multiple choice, filling the gap, etc.], 4-8 items about Iberian civilization, and 1 written composition [around 150 words]; 2) ORAL EXAM, aimed at assessing the acquisition of linguistic knowledge and communicative competences [CEFR B1 level] starting from the mandatory readings. *** EVALUATION CRITERIA: Students will pass the first part of the exam if, first of all, they get at least 5 out of 10 points in the dictation; then, they will have to answer correctly to at least 60% of the grammar exercises and prove, in the written composition, a correct use of verb tenses, discourse markers, etc., and a good grammaticality of the writing [according to CEFR B1 level]. The oral exam will be passed if the student is able to convey personal information and opinions on everyday, domestic and common topics [also related to the mandatory readings], using grammarly correct forms. *** As for the ORAL EXAM, students must take their own book to the exam, plain and with no notes on it. *** The final mark is based on the average of the grades of the written and the oral exams. To pass the whole exam, students must reach the minimum grade [18/30] in both its parts. *** LEARNING SUPERVISION IN ITINERE: In-class and at-home tests on the course topics; grammar tests [with exercises], compositions, dictations, oral comprehensions and translation. SPANISH PHONETICS, PHONOLOGY AND ORTHOGRAPHY: [15 hours, held by Professor Mancinelli]: current phonetic and phonological system of Spanish language, examined also from a contrastive point of view [in comparison with Italian] and by paying attention to diatopic variation as well; Spanish orthography; syllable division and graphic accentuation rules. *** SPANISH LANGUAGE TRAINING [96 hours, held by native-speaker lecturers]: Spanish grammar and Iberian civilization. Grammar contents: definite and indefinite articles; nouns and adjectives [morphology]; use of ser, estar, haber and tener; adjectives and possessive, demonstrative and numeral pronouns; the comparison; all the times of the indicative of the regular and irregular verbs; subjunctive present; use of the most frequent prepositions; personal and impersonal forms of obligation; regular past participles and morphology of the gerund; regular and irregular past participles; affirmative and negative imperative of the regular and irregular verbs.

By the end of the course, students will know: 1) Spanish grammar and Iberian civilization, according to CEFR B1 level; 2) the phonological and orthographic system of Spanish language. Moreover, they will be able to: 1) comprehend and produce written and oral texts in Spanish according to its phonological and orthographic rules; 2) use basic morphological and syntactic elements in a proper way and according to CEFR B1 level; 3) recognise and judge linguistic and extra-linguistic data needed for the interlinguistic communication; 4) communicate in activities which require a personal information and opinion exchange on domestic and common topics; 5) describe in a grammatically correct Spanish issues and aspects of their own background or everyday life, and express immediate needs or briefly share personal experiences and opinions.
