The instrumental language course is combined with a metalinguistic approach to the French lexicon in both a diachronic and synchronic perspective and an analysis of idiomatic expressions, as well as phonological and polysemous phenomena whose mastery enables the learner to grasp the nuances of advertising language and the humour on which it is based. The examination integrates necessary morphosyntactic skills of CEFR level B2 with complementary skills of a historical-sociological nature (linguistic and cultural stereotypes).

The integrated class includes the French Linguistics A module (a 30-hour course, held in the first semester) and the French Language Exercises A module which is an annual course of 92 hours. It combines a metalinguistic approach and a language learning program that brings the student from level B1 to level B2 of the CEFR.

CEFR level B1 is required (French Language I module).

Each of the partial examinations that make up the integrated module comprises both a written test and an oral test. The assessment of skills and abilities takes equal account of the results obtained in the two modules: the final mark for French Language III is therefore obtained from the average of the final marks obtained in the two modules that make up the integrated examination.
French Linguistics B:
The written test consists of a 120-point test (each question corresponds to a quarter point, the mark is expressed in thirtieths). The duration of the test is 3 hours. It consists of open questions on morphosyntax, vocabulary and phonological/semantic phenomena. 25 points are devoted to the analysis of significant occurrences to be found in at least two corpora analysed during the course. It is necessary to achieve at least 18/30 in order to pass the written test and enter the oral test. The outcome of the written test will be communicated via the ‘Esse3 - Computer Services’ IT platform.
The oral test covers the presentation of individual work (see course sheet) on questions relating to the diachronic part of the programme and the critical analysis of some advertising slogans. The grade for the oral test, expressed in thirtieths, is assessed as follows:
It will be judged i) insufficient if evidence shows serious gaps in training, inadequate use of specific terminology;
ii) sufficient (from 18 to 21) a test demonstrating limited knowledge of the topics covered, inadequate use of specific terminology, limited ability to apply theoretical knowledge;
iii) fair (from 22 to 25) a test that demonstrates fair knowledge of the topics covered during the course, mostly adequate use of terminology, fair ability to apply theoretical knowledge to the conduct of research;
iv) good (26 to 28) a paper demonstrating good knowledge of the topics covered in the course, adequate use of terminology, good ability to apply theoretical knowledge to the conduct of research;
(iv) excellent (29 to 30) a test demonstrating excellent knowledge of the topics, consistently adequate use of terminology, excellent ability to apply theoretical knowledge, fluency of presentation. 30 cum laude rewards excellent competence in all the areas identified.
The final grade for French Linguistics B is obtained from the average of the written and oral examination.
French Language B exercises III:
The examination consists of a written part and an oral part. The written part consists of two independent tests (3 hours for each test, mark out of 30), taken in two sittings: a grammar test (out of 30), a written composition test (out of 20) / dictation (out of 10). The minimum mark in the two individual tests for admission to the oral test is 18/30. The oral test (approx. 15 minutes) consists of the presentation and discussion of the compulsory activity carried out individually monitored by the teacher during the second semester. A maximum of 3 points may be awarded for the oral test. One point is awarded for appropriateness of speech and fluency of expression, one point for grammatical correctness, one point for phonological correctness, taking into account the objectives set (CEFR level B2).
Students with disabilities, DSA, BES will be able to use the necessary support tools during the conduct of all the examinations planned, written and oral.

The programme provides, for the French linguistics A module, a metalinguistic approach (reflection on the creation of the French lexicon, in both a diachronic and synchronic perspective, analysis of morphology, study of phonological and semantic phenomena, also applied to the concept of ‘humour’ declined in various domains, study of idiomatic expressions); for the Exercise II course, the development of the various skills involved in going from a B1 CEFR level of competence to a B2 level, applied to all the areas concerned (morphosyntax, vocabulary, phonology, pragmatics).

Knowledge and comprehension:
The French Language II course leads the students to a full B2 CEFR level of competence in both written and spoken language in the various skills covered by the descriptors and allows them to develop a metalinguistic and critical approach, with a focus on the morphological, phonological, and semantic fields.
Ability to apply knowledge and understanding:
The students will be aware of the mechanisms underlying the creation of terms in the French language and will master the terminology that will enable them to identify and describe the various lexical and semantic phenomena analyzed during the course within various collections of text. They will also be able to translate sentences from French into Italian and vice versa, dealing with the issue of faux-amis, polysemy and lexical idiomatisms.
