English Linguistics Specialistica A for Tourism-LM 49 aims to explore and analyse the use of English in the promotion and dissemination of cultural and environmental heritage, as well as the events and tourism services associated with them.

The course general contents and specific topics, language skills and activities, the end-of-course examination, as well as the assessment criteria applied, refer to C1 level of the CEFR (Common European Framework of Reference).

Language skills at an advanced level: min. B2+, but C1 is preferred (CEFR).

Students coming from CdS TUR (BA) who will sit English Linguistics Specialistica A for Tourism-LM 49 exam, are required compulsory extra material (please, check the specific syllabus for further details).

The course will be held in the second semester (March-May/June).

The use of handbooks for the theoretical approach will be supported by authentic materials for the analysis of the linguistic features and the rhetorical strategies under scrutiny.

ASSIGNMENT:

The assignment involves producing a report and an oral presentation based on a brief individual research project in a specific area of interest related to critical/sectorial studies on ‘Tourism’ and/or ‘Cultural Heritage’. This research project and the corresponding presentation will serve as the starting point for the oral discussion during the exam, and must be closely connected to the topics covered during the year.

Students will pass their exam if they get 18/30 in both their reading/project pesentation and the oral discussion of course contents. The final grade is calculated on a weighted assessment basis.
With reference to the 'Intended learning objectives' (see below), the following grades correspond to different skills: 18-22/30-sufficient, 23-25/30-satisfying, 26-28/30 good, 29-30 lode-very good.

ORAL EXAM ASSESSMENT CRITERIA: 1. Knowledge of the topics covered during the course; 2. Organization of the speech; 3. Clarity and depth of explanation regarding the object of the question; 4. Lexical proficiency; 5. Variety of vocabulary used in relation to the topic discussed; 6. Analytical skills in reference to the key characteristics of the authentic texts presented; 7. Overall discursive ability.

English Linguistics Specialistica A-LM 49 will foster the student’s ability to organise an individual research project (RP) in the field of Tourism, with specific reference to the cultural heritage, and to the rhetorical and linguistic strategies more frequently used in promotional texts/discourse.

APPLIED KNOWLEDGE/SKILLS
Linguistic awareness and critical thinking in the decoding process will foster the related process of encoding.
English Linguistics Specialistica A students will be able to write a variety of texts for different communicative aims in the academic and professional setting.

Linguistic knowledge and language understanding will be used at a practical level, and applied to the many disciplinary research and professional contexts.
