Course Contents
The course focuses on pathophysiology, i.e. the functional changes that are caused by disease. Information will be given on the causes and mechanisms of disease connected to nutrition.

Learning Outcomes
The students should obtain information on the fundamental mechanisms and causes of the disease, in particular those due to gene-environment interaction, with a focus on nutrition.
Prerequisites
Basic knowledge of general pathology, biochemistry and molecular biology.
Teaching Methods
The course includes a part that will be held in class and a part of laboratory experience.
The part in class will be based on frontal teaching and interactive discussion.

Assessment Methods
Written exam with 30 multiple-choice questions on pathophysiology, 5 multiple-choice questions on the lab . A minimum score of 18/30 is needed to pass the exam.
The students are expected to have acquired adequate information on General Pathology and Pathophysiology and to be able to use this information to analyse the pathophysiological mechanisms of the most frequent human diseases.
Detailed Syllabus
1) Pathophysiology of lipid metabolism
2) The causes and biology of cancer
3) Malnutrition: obesity.
Practical laboratory activities: cell counting, protein extraction and quantification; DNA isolation. Theory of PCR and quantitative PCR.
Gender mainstreaming: gender-specific aspects will be discussed for each disease.
Expected Learning Outcomes
The student should obtain information on the fundamental mechanisms and causes of disease, in particular those due to environmental interactions, with a focus on nutrition.
The student will gather information on the most important pathophysiological processes that cause disease.
The student will also acquire the ability to apply the information to the study of the mechanism of human disease.
