Course Contents
The course aims to introduce the student to the theory and use of statistical methods useful in the chemical laboratory. See the “Extended Program” section for more detailed information.

Learning Outcomes
Knowledge: to provide the student with the mastery of the necessary statistical knowledge in chemistry and the principles of experimental design. Ability to choose the correct statistical test in situations most often found in chemistry. Ability to establish a full factorial design and to draw conclusions correctly. Skills: knowing how to apply the correct statistical test to practical situations; knowing how to establish a full factorial design and treat the results correctly. Judgement ability: ability to draw the correct conclusions from the application of statistical tests and from the results obtained from full factorial designs. Communication skills: knowing how to report the result of a statistical test and of an experimental design correctly.

Lectures, Powerpoint presentations, simulations and exercises, also with the PC.

Assessment Methods
Written exam consisting of 5-8 questions aimed at evaluating theoretical knowledge (open questions), skills (solving exercises), judgment skills (providing a choice or critical judgment).
To pass the test, the student must at least demonstrate knowledge and understanding of the basic notions of statistical tests and their application and of experimental design.
Excellence can be achieved by demonstrating solid theoretical and practical foundations in problem solving and demonstrating the ability to compare and be critical.
Detailed Syllabus
Random variables and statistical indicators. Statistical dependence and independence and their implications. Probability distributions (normal, Student's t, Fisher's F, Chi square, Poisson, binomial) and their use. The statistical tests (structure, purpose, alpha and beta errors). Parametric and non-parametric tests (introduction to the various tests and examples of their use). Correlation between variables and autocorrelation. ANOVA. Application of tests to real situations to make decisions in the laboratory based on statistical significance and for the validation of analytical methods. Experimental approaches to evaluate the significance of effects. Introduction to experimental design, analysis of the problem, two-levels full factorial designs.
Exercises with and without the PC.
