The course aims to provide a basic knowledge of the processes and historical events that characterize the contemporary age.Special attention will be paid to the Cultural History and media. In particular, we will focus on the Atlantic revolutions and the first globalization, the industrial revolution and the rise of Europe, colonialism and imperialism, the First World War, totalitarianism, the Second World War and the Cold War, decolonization, the Italian Republic, the "thirty glorious years" and the cultural revolution of the second half of the twentieth century, the end of bipolarism and the beginning of a new phase of instability and transition.

The two volumes (L'Ottocento, Il Novecento) by Tommaso Detti e Giovanni Gozzini published by Pearson (2021) are among the reference texts for both attending and non-attending students. Students should choose one of the following text: C. Aydin, Il lungo Ottocento. Una storia politica internazionale, Einaudi, Torino 2019; C. Bayly, La nascita del mondo moderno, 1780-1914, Einaudi, Torino 2007; D. Diner, Raccontare il Novecento. Una storia politica, Milano Garzanti 2001; M. Mazower, Le ombre dell'Europa. Democrazie e totalitarismi nel XX secolo, Garzanti 2000.

To provide students with critical tools for understanding the present, familiarizing them with the scientific method of historiography and introducing them to the analysis of long-term political, social, and cultural processes. Attendance is recommended.

Written exam with the possibility of an oral exam upon student request

The course will focus the students' attention on the main historical processes characterizing the contemporary, focusing above all on the history of the twentieth century.
